Whilst we perhaps take for granted that materials of old are available it is quite. Often found the old specification no longer exists, yet is there a document available that sets out modern alternatives which could be accepted

HRA guidance notes provide information for boilers, as does RSP6 from the ORR.

Whilst a very informative document, this HRA Guidance note is really a beginners guide to materials technology and doesn't generally provide the information Jordan is seeking. For this, it is better to look at the individual guidance note relative to the subject. For example, the Guidance note on Boiler Mountings, Pipework and Fittings gives detail for the different materials that should be used for these items.

You should have said. Axleboxes would have been either cast iron or cast steel and I would think that Hudswell would have used cast iron unless it was something special. LMA suggest the use of BS 1452 Grade 12 for the box and Grade 10 for the keep although personally I would stick to grade 12 for both. That's an old standard but everyone understands it and it is still specified by many. There's also a possibility that they were bronze castings. The LMA handbook gives the attached info, which also includes info on bearings.
