Agreed, but practical suggestions and sound advice appear to have fallen on stony ground, so...

Practical suggestions and sound advice on this forum seem to consist of telling the victim of the moment to give up!

Some of the comments do indeed give the air of someone tormenting an animal to see if it will react. However the problem with fanciful schemes of this nature is that they run the risk of sucking resources away from schemes that are not fanciful.

I've seen no evidence that these schemes you guys mock are taking any resources away from anything. That being the case I see no value at all in the abuse.

the Maunsell L1 design was quite a remarkable design as was the SECR E1 upon which it was based. minimum weight for maximum tractive effort designed to pull the boat trains out of Victoria down to Dover and Folkstone over the LCDR route which had numerous weight restrictions. a very 'modern' design albeit 4-4-0.
one should never consider building a 'dodgy' fullsize loco as a new build, but the L1s excelled themselves and were excellent locos. modern large piston valves with long travel. only possible drawback was a steeply sloping grate. incidentally the Maunsell Q class (one preserved on the Bluebell) had a very similar arrangement of stephensons gear with rocking levers.
    cheers,

Please note I said "run the risk of" rather than "they do".

  8. I don't think they will take resources away from any other new builds. It seems to me that people tend to like one particular region/class of engine, so the person who is supporting say the P2 (one of them!) is not necessarily going to have been someone who would support an L1.
But that's not what I am getting at, for me it's the way that every time someone starts a facebook page, someone on here (usually one of just a few) posts about it and more or less invites people to ridicule it, also making sure along the way that no-one dares to forget that some of the lads made a few silly comments.....
They say that things you say stay on the internet for a long time, this is true, but just in case these things might disappear they also make sure that they mention people by name and what they said just to make sure that they are not forgotten. Even if that person(s) are not anything to do with that group.
I suppose you could say I look these things from a different perspective, being a female and a mum, and would hate to think that anyone was posting things the like of which are put here about either of my boys! Not that they put silly things on the internet (yet!).

That is a gross over-generalisation. I advised Stuart to gain some experience by first getting involved in someone else's new-build or loco restoration. I don't think that was telling him "to give up" - in fact I believe strongly in encouraging youngsters to get involved. Ray.

Marshall5's comments are not mutually contradictory at all. They amount to "encourage new talent but discourage thoughtless jokers". There should be no problem with this except from the pro joker faction. However I do think we should not keep reviving the spectre of said jokers unless they continue to wave their cap and pigs bladder!

Shouldn't you be saying that in the P2 thread?

The Maunsell L1 looks quite similar to the LMS 2P 4-4-0. 6ft 8 inch driving wheels as against 6ft 9 inch on the LMS one. ( what's an inch between friends...), 19.5 x 26 cylinders as against 19 x 26, both boilers pressed to 180 lbs.
I dont have the detailed info to compare the physical dimensions of the two classes, but you know what I am thinking....

Economy of scale, and all that.....

Which 'P2' do you mean . Is it the dodgy one or the one that will be built ?

That's fine but it depends on who defines who is a joker or new talent. Then it just comes down to opinions and personal preference/prejudices.

Martin, I was one of several members who tried to advise Stuart when he first launched his J39 project. I suggested first joining an established group to learn, not only the engineering side of things but also marketing and finance before launching his own project. He has consistently refused to accept any advice despite promises to the contrary. Since then, IIRC, we have had proposals for an L1, a Dean Goods, and now an L1 again. I cannot be the only one who feels frustrated by Stuart's refusal to accept constructive advice hence my comment re his lack of credibility. I don't believe my posts were contradictory - I will go out of my way to help youngsters who are willing to learn but refuse to tolerate fools of whatever age. As it happens one of the few people I trust implicitly with my own engines is just 15 yrs old. Ray.

I might be wrong, but I believe this particular incarnation of the L1 is not one of Stuart Reeder's projects. Though the about us page isn't exactly forthcoming on that detail.

Just to echo marshall5, even the guy who runs the new build website is rather skeptical that this project will get any further than a faceache page and a website (probably paid for by the parents......................) and will not include it in any of his updates in future.

If the proposers had stated that they had the backing of X railway/project group, were in talks with X person(s) regarding help, advice, expertise etc they may have gained some support from the wider fraternity other than their mates............................................... strange how the funding for new builds is being channeled into those projects with the relevant expertise to see it to completion and fit for purpose.............. the one that stands out a mile is the P2 project, I doubt very much that the lads, even in their wildest dreams believed the response would be so overwhelming so quickly - no offence to the other projects quietly getting on with it, and they will all get there in there own time (and thanks to the new build steam website, keeps them in the spotlight in an impartial way) I for one am impressed with the way the two (main?) standard projects are making great headway - definitely looking forward to seeing them, BUT to my and many other minds this L1 is nowt but a pipe dream backed up by nothing other than fresh air..............................

That's great, you are to be congratulated on that. There just seems to be, in my humble opinion, a lot of tarring with the same brush going on on this forum, not specifically by yourself, but generally.
