In most recent Railway Modeller, the last sentance says "Despite best efforts none made it to preservation". Was there a preservation attempt on on of these lovely engines.

I don't think that I have ever heard of a preservation attempt on a D20. There was a thread on here about locos that nearly made it into preservation, might be worth a search through the archives.

IIRC I read somewhere that some enthusiasts wanted a class D20 preserved when the last ones were withdrawn in the 1950s.Though as a class D17 (NER class M) no1621 was already in the old York Museum & it was still early days for the preservation movement it came to nothing. It is a pity the old museum was not a bit bigger we might have a NBR Atlantic & other locos around today.

Yes indeed there was an attempt to save the last North Eastern Class R/D20 1260/[6]2395 in 1957. The British Railways Board declined. But did allow one side of the engine to be given a rough unlined coat of black paint complete numbers & emblem and then a series of "offical" photos to be taken. The engine then being broken up on the scrap lines at North Road [Darlington] Works. If you can get your hands on the Late Ken Hoole's 4-4-0 Classes of the North Eastern Railway then you'll see a pair of "before & after" photos in the section on the R/D20s........
