    Evening all,

I know continental locos are not everyone’s cup of tea but myself and a few volunteers at the Kent and East Sussex Railway have carried out a partial repaint of ‘Norwegian’ into a similar livery to that carried when the Engine was withdrawn. Next year the Engine celebrates its 100th birthday and we thought we should do something different to celebrate.

    Enjoy!

Given the history of the Colonel Stevens empire and its propensity to pick up whatever stock it could with the limited funds available, it seems to me that The Norwegian is rather in keeping with the spirit of the line.

Did it originally carry the name King Haakon or was that another loco?

No, that's No 377 of the same class, which I believe is now at Bressingham.

Looking very fine. It is a shame but every time I have visited Tenterden she has been out of service- I think she's a babe of a locomotive, and would dearly like to experience her in action.

Ross, the engine will be covering a lot of terms over the summer. If you can make a visit let me know and I will find out which days she is booked to run and let you know. Its a lovely engine to drive!

Is there any photos of it in service in Norway ? Also does it fit within the UK loading gauge ?

The cylinders do get very close to the platform edge at Tenterden I believe.

Nice to drive? I'll bet. Seems an excellent design all round. Good looking, Good tractive effort, light weight, but plenty on the drivers, good acceleration, plenty of coal and water capacity. Tank loco economy but "big engine" looks. What more could you ask for?

Interestingly its not got that much weight on the drivers and can be a bit light on its feet, hence the restriction to 4 mk1 carriages up Tenterden bank. Its incredibly comfortable, easy to prepare and makes a lovely sound.

Its being pressed into service today on a driver experience course whilst another loco is repaired so I will see if I can grab some photos of it in action.

When 377 was on the GCR (‘70s) they had to move some of the platform edge slabs in slightly at Quorn. You can still see the evidence of this if you know where to look.

007.JPG 002.JPG 007.JPG 002.JPG Snaps of snaps, so sorry for picture quality.....'King Hakkon' is the green one at Ashford Steam Centre in October 1972. 376 is the black one at Rolvenden in September 1973.

First loco I ever saw at the K&ESR on a rainy October day in 1975, wheelslipping in the wet whilst running round at Rolvenden (the line only went from Tenterden to a little way beyond Rolvenden at that time).

On another occasion I remember it hauling 5 up to Tenterden after the banking engine (Sutton) failed. It was dry so the Norwegian had no trouble that day.

Wouldn’t it be nice if it were possible to get 376 and 377 together some day.

Wheel slip is a strange thing. I've seen Met 1 slipping light loco, and I've also seen her happily take 3 bogies uphill sure footed. I've seen a Beattie well-tank pulling hard enough to really bark without slipping, I've also seen the same loco slipping on just a breath of steam.

Tyre profile wear can make a huge difference.
