    According to Wikipedia : "Using differential gearing to transmit the power, it was built as a 4-8-4 with the coupling rods connecting the centre four pairs of driving wheels. The coupling rods between the innermost axles were later removed, but as the four axles were driven by a single gearbox, it remained a 4-8-4".

    Make of that what you will.

    The one I was reading about was a modern one, when lower power is required it drops to one bank of cylinders. Which engine it was I can't remember

    Cadillac tried something similar with one of their V8s in the late 70s, the idea was some of the cylinders stopped firing when the car was at cruising speed and it effectively became a V4

    And at what pace? I’ve used the 68 hauled services out of Marylebone a few times, and the power gives them the pace to run turn and turn about with the units on the line.

    Was it cylinders switching out or valves being kept open whilst the spark plugs and appropriate injection cycle interrupted.
    This, I think, is a system used on Ford Mustangs on cruise.

    Reminds me of BR 10100 in 1950, designed by Lt. Col. L. F. R. Fell, but was scrapped in 1960 after a fire.
