I am hoping to visit NYMR in September.

Do the Whitby trains use a single loco & change from the ex-Pickering loco at Grosmont or do they work throughout?

The first train from Pickering involves a loco change at Grosmont and after that they tend to use a single loco AFAIK

When I was there last Friday the 14.00 (I think it was) to Whitby changed loco at Grosmont on both the out and return Journey.

The answer tends to be - it depends!

There is always a loco change on the 09:00 ex-Pickering and the last train ex-Whitby (17:30 or 18:00 depending on timetable).

If there is a single Whitby loco available, on the peak (Gold) timetable, it comes off at Grosmont at 11:20 and then there is a loco swap also at 13:10 on the 12:00 ex-Pickering. This loco can then work throughout for the rest of the day (14:00 ex Whitby, 16:00 ex Pickering and 18:00 Ex Whitby to Grosmont). If 2 locos are available, then no loco change is needed at 11:20 or 13:10.

On the shoulder timetable (Red), one Whitby loco tends to be used and comes off at 14:20 also to work a shuttle up top Goathland that then forms to the last service into Whitby and comes out at 17:30.

September has a week of Gold and is then mainly Red. Fridays 11th is now upgraded to Red, as is the last week and Sunday 27th. Sundays 6th and 13th and Fridays 18th and 25th are non-Whitby days.

At present, 75029 and 825 are the Whitby locos. 30926 Repton will be joining the fleet when suitable authorisations are complete and a test run has been undertaken.
