Ouch, indeed. We're booked on her when she comes down to the Thames in October. Will have to see what happens.

Why oh why were the paddles still going ahead when she was so close???
Also, Anybody tell me what's the rope hanging off the anchor? Looks like a mooring rope but why there and it looks to me as though it was disappearing into the paddle when they finally went into reverse...

On a paddle steamer the heaving lines are thrown from the sponsons. The mooring lines are run from the capstans at the bow/stern and secured at the outer end to hooks on the sponson

She was leaving not arriving and it appears that the warps/springs were not correctly managed. To reverse Waverley's engine takes a while.

Been unlucky this year! Holiday with large family group of 15 near Dunoon but the 4 trips we were planning were cancelled due to a mechanical problem!
Try again in a year or two!
My wife waited at Greenock pier-- alas!!
It must be very challenging to keep this wonderful vessel working on such a complex programme
May catch it in London-- a previous trip through Tower Bridge was brilliant!

Aye those paddles must act like big flywheels to some extent, I imagine screws reverse quicker unless there's more mass in the engines

You can 'crash stop' a paddle steamer from full speed in as little as twice the ships length.

It doesn't do either the machinery or the engineers much good but it can be done

Having seen both Waverley & the 1966 Ben My Cree (Steam Turbine) do emergency manoeuvring the response was immediate unlike a motor ship

The famous Waverley paddle steamer is to return to service, two weeks after crashing into a pier on the River Clyde. The steamer hit the headlines last Friday when it was embarking on a routine trip from Glasgow to the Isle of Bute. With passengers on board, it struck the pier at Rothesay. No one was injured.Waverly Excursions, which manages the steamer, took the decision to cancel all sailings following the damage to the steamer’s bow. The world’s last remaining sea-going paddle steamer has been undergoing repair work which is set to be completed ahead of Friday 8 September when it will sail Weymouth in Dorset.

I've only ever seen a crash stop as you call it on a triple expansion vertical screw ship engine.

Glad to see the damage didn't result in a prolonged stay in dry dock. With Rydes fate pretty much sealed Waverley should be put in bubble wrap wherever she goes

The ability to stop Kingswear Castle quickly is very useful when running in a busy river with boaters about who have all the gear but no idea.... This is KC's one party trick that she can do better than a screw driven vessel!

Looks like they were steaming ahead against the forward backspring to spring the stern off the quay and the spring was slacked away in error letting her run ahead.Steaming against a fore or back spring is a normal maneuvre to take a v/l on or off the quay.

And those who are familiar with the River Dart, particularly during the summer, will know what WB2624 means.

They have been advertising the Waverley Thames Estuary salings for the end of this month on Radio Caroline for the past couple of weeks - which is certainly a first for them!
Mind you, one of the cruises visits the River Blackwater, so the Caroline ship the Ross Revenge will be one of the things to see whilst they are there...
