I'm told that the fireman on Bittern, Paul Kane, collapsed on the footplate approaching Stevenage and couldn't be revived. He had been involved with steam from the early days when based at Carlisle and was fireman on some of the epic runs with 6229 that I remember well from the 1980s.
My condolances go to his family, friends and colleagues at WCRC.
    Very sad news indeed.

It has been reported elsewhere that main line steam fireman Paul Kane passed away yesterday. Yet to be confirmed but assumed he was the fireman taken ill on the footplate of 60019 at Stevenage yesterday evening. Deepest sympathy to Paul's family and friends.

That is very sad indeed, he did indeed produce the steam for many epic runs, a real gent always ready for a chat and bit of banter.,

I knew Paul being a Carlisle 12A man myself. Railwayman through and through. Still the current 'Blue Riband' holder I think with 46229 over Ais Gill. A true gent and comic who will be sorely missed by anyone involved with WCRC, Mainline steam and railways in general. A 'wizzard with the shovel' would be an understatement. The tips and advice he gave me when I was at Fort William with the B1 will always stick with me.

Finally just to say my thoughts are with his family and friends.

    RIP Paul. Railway legend.

Such sad scenes at Stevenage last night, extremely upsetting and shocking. Our condolences go out to Paul's family, friends and colleagues.

My happiest memory with Paul at the regulator was his EWS retirement special on 13th July 2002 with 6201. The return of "The Fishwick Fellsman" from Carlisle was the finest run I have ever had on the WCML,the noise over Shap and the scene as we raced through Lancaster were simply unbelievable. Not forgetting the round of applause and presentation at Preston.

Thanks for everything Paul and rest in peace.

Extremely sad. Traumatic for his colleagues on the footplate and devastating for friends and family.

    RIP.

What a sad time for all his family and friends, especially coming up to Christmas.
I believe that WCRC and Rileys are planning something as a remberence when the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express gets to Carlisle on the 30th.

A very very sad day indeed.

Having had the pleasure of knowing and working with Paul for the last five years, he will be deeply missed. Paul was a true gentleman, always with a smile on his face and a song in his heart. We can take some comfort from knowing he died with a shovel in his hand doing a job he loved.

Paul may no longer be with us, but he will never be forgotten. "The Jacobite" will never be quite the same again. The video may be a couple of years old now, but it was Paul at his best, he certailnly wasnt afraid of Beasdale Bank!

Had some brilliant runs on the footplate with him, a great gentleman who will be missed by everyone who met him. Thanks Paul for all the tips, jokes and advice, the trip to Mallaig will never be the same again.....

Incredibly sad news about Paul Kane. Condolences to his family. Little consolation I know but he went out doing what he loved and was respected for.

Not knowing the gentleman, he seems to be well respected and my condolences, too, are with his family. Having attended too many funerals this year of family and friends, I can understand their loss. If there is some sort of collection on his behalf?

Very upseting scenes after arriving at Stevenage on saturday evening.

Thoughts go to Pauls family and many friends during this very sad time. A great icon lost from the steam movement, doing what he loved best.

    Cheers Paul, RIP
