    Hello

Anyone know the RAL or BS spec for the yellow paint used on rail plant?

    Thanks in advance.

A quick Google for "JCB yellow" got a few hits for RAL 1007.

But JCB Yellow is not Rail Yellow.
Best try direct enquiry to Williamsons of Ripon.

    Ah... misread the OP's intent...

BR Spec 81 lists three yellows suitable for brushing (sprays have a different Cat No.):—

Item 202 - Warning Yellow Gloss Finish - Cat No. 28/5316
Item 227 - Tyne & Wear Yellow Gloss Finish - Cat No. 28/5476
    Item 231 - W. Midlands Yellow Gloss Finish - Cat No. 28/5496

    No mention of 'Rail Yellow'.

BR Road vehicle painting specifies Warning Yellow.

AFAIK, Williamsons understand BR Cat Nos, but best to check

JCB yellow is rail yellow, just like GWR green is middle chrome green, light brunswick green or olive green. Depends on opinion. JCB first painted their machines yellow and this was followed by others, eventually becoming the standard colour for plant, whether it was on BR or the roadside. I doubt that there is a definitive 'rail yellow'.

Network Rail "Engineering Yellow" is BS381C 356. This is NOT the same as Warning (aka Visibility) yellow. "Engineering Yellow" is the colour used on all NR vehicles.

The RAL colours quoted above are colours acceptable for warning panels on the ends of all rail stock equipment etc.

You will find all 'plant requirements' in Railway Group Standards GM/GN 2575 under GM/RT 2180. The page for colour is page 173 but is given under the European nomenclature of CIE (L.a.b.)

Whilst the above RAL colours are quite different from each other they are ALL acceptable for 'warning panels'. There is NO technical test that they are put too and judgement is by eye alone.

A conversion chart for RAL to CIE can be found at

    Convert RAL to RGB

and RAL to RAL-RBG and RAL-HEX at

    RAL Color Chart | www.RALcolor.com

Personally I would buy a tin of SIGNAL YELLOW and brush it on.
