Yes the low pressure systems are slowly approaching from the north west but here in the south the high pressure has strengthened.

Waverley through bingley just past 11, observed from a mile away - not a whiff of steam, in fact sounded like a trawler going through the valley...but since all the grass is in its death throes cant be helped...

Correct. Quite a load for the class 37 today I'm afraid.

Question--- when the A3s like 60038/82/92 were on the S and C, did any of them have the German smoke deflectors? I can't recall seeing a photo of one. Maybe the Helm Wind meant it wasn't a problem!

I think the answer is no.
9 class A3s were transferred to Holbeck in February 1960 to work the S&C but 8 of them were transferred away by July 1961 which was before the majority of them had the deflectors fitted. The ninth A3, 60038, outlasted the others at Holbeck until 6/63 but was never fitted with them. With the commencement of the summer timetable in 1961 S&C express workings were handed over to the Sulzer Type 4 diesels hence the exodus of the majority of the A3s from 55A.

I wonder if there is any prospect of 60103 having some outings sans deflectors? I know they are probably essential for visibility purposes to lift the steam but they spoil the appearance of an otherwise beautiful and elegant loco in my opinion. As far as I know it would be authentic for the loco to run without too, but it might be allowed to run on the network without?

Probably not on the ML. They tested her out a couple of times on her previous ticket during the Marchington era and the drifting exhaust from the double chimney caused visibility problems.
I don't mind the deflectors but I would love to see her run without them in her current guise. I guess she could run on heritage lines without them. Perhaps it is something they could do when she is near the end of her current ticket.

I’d love to see 6233 on the mainline in magnificent LMS maroon sans deflectors for the same reasons but likewise doubt it will happen again for the same reasons as for ‘103

Think its highly unlikely fs will ever run with double chimney but without smoke deflectors unless the kylchap is taken out and a sharper blast 'conventional'double chimney is employed
Putting back a single chimney with/ without kylchap/ lempor whatever might also obviate the need for Darth Vaders TIE fighter to be permanently fixed to the smokebox

Perhaps if a petition was given to the NRM with a suitable cheque to cover the work/ paint job etc and then some - that might work.

Of course such alterations would render FS less capable, but since she is run to class 7 loadings anyway cant see that its a problem

Clearly if steam obscures the forward vision without the deflectors that cannot be countenanced on the network.
It isn't authentic for 60103 but the deflectors Humorist carried were more aesthetically agreeable in my view.

Nice video of a 37 working hard with a 154 ton headboard on the front.

    Waverley FS 1b (2).jpg

With Pen-y-ghent prominent in the background, 'Flying Scotsman' works today's 'Waverley' over the River Ribble at Helwith Bridge with a shove from behind,
Ron Smith Smith driving and Clive Goult firing. The recent dry spell is obvious with the low water level in the river.

    Waverley FS 2b (2).jpg

Heading the return 'Waverley' towards Kirkby Stephen, 60103 works through Smardale cutting Chris Cubitt driving and Matthew Durkan on the shovel.

Brave attempt to hide the diesel at Smardale such a pity at the moment that such measures have to be taken

60103 crossing Arten Gill Viaduct on the return leg with 37669 doing most of the work, as to be expected. Could hear her chattering just after passing Dent, but shut off not long after. Still makes for an excellent sight, one of the best shot locations on the S&C. DSC_0928 (2).JPG

My first memory of A3s from the 60s was with the German smoke deflectors and I thought them to be more elegant than the larger style, coming up from the cylinders, that other locos at the time carried. A 12 year old cannot be expected to appreciate whether they were original or not. From that point onwards it made A3s easy to identify and I was pleased that 60103 carried them when the last overhaul was finally completed
