Especially when compared to the climb to Sapperton just a week ago with the same load. <BJ>

The Scotsman FB page is rather an amusing read. Apparently one of the stewards was going through the train saying the driver has 'failed' !

Oh dear. Cue cries of “should have kept the diesel on the back”. Any info on the nature of the failure?

Doesn't appear to have been steaming that well all day and seemed to be getting worse. Steaming issues and leaking tubes often go together; or perhaps it's just very poor coal. But as one's nowhere near the ECML, in fact sitting at home drinking Tanglefoot after a Summer Lightning or two, it's just a guess; and one's judgement might be getting a tad impaired. Know where I'd rather be though!!!

Despite finding out at york 60163 had a tail gunner on due to running long distance on a trunk route (the E.C.M.L.) and finding out 1st class and premier diners were situated in the rear coaches near the C.47 I was in coach C , 4 coaches away from the dreaded diesel, I had some good dining mates from Chester le street opposite me talking about industry in the north east then and now and heritage railway banter whilst dining, but to cap it off despite the 5 op stops each way whilst en route up and down, all in all a good day out yet again on 60163 and wi R.T.C. some nice fast running on the E.C.M.L. (P.S hope more tours come in june july) I dident get no pics of tornado this time but decided instead to explain my experience on tornado on the Edinburgh flyer.

I can remember back in the time when poor coal was seen as an inconvenience and at times a challenge for the crew that was taken head on rather than seen as a deal breaker. But as you say, who knows what the problem really was yesterday other than it was serious enough to make it a liability on the ECML.

At least the loco is now home and can be attended to. It seems to remain a frail loco as I've had it fail on me and there are few main line heritage locos for which that is the case.

Have a chat to the fireman about the coal before making such pronouncements. If coal was indeed the problem, you have no way of knowing just how bad the stuff was. The steam loco that doesn’t fail hasn’t been built yet and if you look back over the years, quite a few main line locos have had their problems. Even your precious 35028 sat down once with injector problems when the water got too warm in the tender.

Had a great day out with 60163 yesterday, and the added bonus of the Standard Class being at the front, with us in the 3rd coach.
A bit of a stagger on way to Edinburgh, 60163 did plenty of tidy running from Durham to Granthouse.
I did wonder if we got help away from Granthouse, as we were up to 80mph on my iphone speedo, really quick, and out of path slightly.
Highlight of the return were the slog to granthouse, then the restart, 60163 sounded fantastic,
Both loops at Morpeth were out of service so water was taken at Heaton in both directions, quite quickly, then re-join our path.
Finished at Durham, after a quick departure from Newcastle, and she made a surefooted departure from Durham.
Many Thanks to A1 Trust, WRC, RTC, and all of the stewards, we were with 2 "normals", who did the first trip behind steam, and already want to do something else.

That's a bit disingenuous to the fireman who, I understand worked his dangly bits off trying to make the loco steam. It's easy to identify a potential problem with the loco that might give trouble on a run, that's why a FTR is done but all coal looks the same, just lumps of black stuff. It's only out on the road that any shortcomings become apparent.

Astonishingly crass statement from the previous poster who is clearly making a wide range of assumptions from their proverbial armchair. (Not you Johnb, was trying to quote entire conversation).
We are no longer living in the 1950's, we don't know where the next lump of coal is coming from, let alone its 'quality'. Any 90 year old machinery is 'fragile' - but I wouldn't mind betting it is maintained to same exacting standards as it was when it was new.
I would like to see the poster trying to make it steam on poor coal, whilst mindful of the delay minutes if it sat down short of steam on a 125mph railway.
