Thanks Jonathan but looking at the journey times we might just as well drive to Langley. We decided we'd leave the house the same time we would if we were catching the first BRI-PAD so should make Langley in time to get the Elizabeth Line to PAD. See you Saturday.

Pretty obvious that there is the space on the network to do it and it's also to encourage additional customers. Sorry to say though that at £130 from anywhere other than Paddington it's still a big price.

Such a pity that Network Rail can't advertise it as a service that members of the public can travel on.

Yes there are trains running from Paddington to Gloucester but all of them involve a change or two at £70 return and the journey takes three and a half hours.

The RTC trip is steam hauled and takes the same time.

Come on Network Rail, get off the fence and promote travel by the public properly! And RTC, bite the bullet and offer a different fare structure on this one occasion. Not everyone will want dining.

A couple of comments on that Al.
It is not really NR's role to promote rail travel is it, just to provide and maintain the network.
Without knowing current bookings if RTC reduce the price
    1) It is unfair on those already booked at full price, especially if some of these reduced price folk end up in First Class seats.
    2) How would you advertise it in advance to make it worthwhile.
    3) Possible worsening (if that is possible) I.R. implications if charter companies do that I would think.

Yes, of course, I am aware of that but thanks for you quite rightly bringing me down to earth! On pricing, I wouldn't dream of seriously telling the RTC what to do but I have to say that we live in a world where two people sitting next to each other on the same train going between the same two places may well have paid different fares (before any card discounts).

So when was the fare structure on our trains ever 'fair' - normal or charter? :)

And you are of course correct, but this is a sort of reverse incentive to their regulars who support them over the years. And yes I do realise sometimes those that book early may miss out on the £20 offers that RTC do at times. However offering a discount to previous travellers is a more obvious potential "win" then just being another TOC for the day. Just my view.
Having said that the "froth" created on forums elsewhere by the LSL Friday Manchester to Euston was amazing, and perhaps would be "out frothed" by this suggestion.

Tilehurst and Cholsey weren't listed as pick up points. Think they were more pathing. So easy to get to Pad with 30min frequency Elizabeth Line Service. Car parking at Langley only £3.50 a day.

Very noisy as she entered the tunnel for us on the bridge. We got a whistle but couldn't hear it over the 3 cylinder roar!

Odd, though, to have Reading and Tilehurst?

Glad about that. P5 at West Drayton I have not had since a tour down the Staines Branch in the late 60's and never for steam. Would have been annoyed to miss it.

There seems to have been an outbreak of "phantom pick ups" on RTT this year, Brentford on the DCE's and Mill Hill on a York trip spring to mind.
