A couple of weeks ago I posted some video of Eastleigh Railway Preservation Society's S15 loco, E828, working the first charter under privatisation on 1st April 1995. I've now reformatted the whole 36 minute programme and posted it on YouTube

The society and locomotive have close links with both the Swanage Railway and the Mid-Hants, so if you enjoy watching this program, please drop a few quid in either or both of their C19 appeals. Thanks

I do like S15s and thanks for sharing Steamage.

On the subject of this loco, one of the more tedious jobs I thought I'd never have time for involves cataloging my photo archive and my notes are missing for a few making them harder to place and date. I have images taken at Norden on the Swanage Railway where 828 is running round it's train.
Is anyone able to confirm any specific time periods when 828 was running on the Swanage Railway please? There are plenty of images on Flickr but what would be really handy is anyone who can confirm the start and end periods of any loans for the loco.
    Thanks in anticipation. :)

    Hello,

    Extracted from internal ERPS records.
Sorry, I don't have specific dates of steaming on SR apart from searching my slides.

12/5/98 Hauled in light steam by diesel to Bournemouth T&RSMD for open weekend.
    Movement paid for by SWT.

16&17/5/98 Bournemouth T&RSMD open weekend. In light steam.

21/5/98 Moved to Winfrith UKAEA siding for road movement to Swanage railway.
    Movement paid for by SWT.

15/7/98 until 13/9/98 regular work on Swanage Railway

11 &12/98 Worked as required. Used on Santa specials.

2001 & 2002 Worked as required. Boiler certificate expired May 2002 and loco stored.

21 Jan 2004 Moved to Mid Hants Railway ( Alresford) by road. later hauled to Ropley.

    Hopefully this helps.

    Cheers, Neil

thank you Neil, this is really helpful and much appreciated. I have narrowed some of my images taken on the Swanage Railway to August 2002 so I'm not clear whether a boiler extension was given to the S15 in this year?
There are images on Flickr showing 828 working beyond May in 2002.

Whilst talking about 828 and its first charters on the privatised network don't forget its Northern visits : 1994 when representing the SR on April 1 1994 on the Farewell to BR Crewe - Holyhead charters on the privatised network followed by a trip over the S&C on 30 April 1994.

I enjoyed the Exe Parrett railtour with 828 many many years ago. Where is she these days and is she operational or what?

Thanks, I thought there had been an extension to the boiler certificate but wasn't certain.

She's at Ropley on the MHR undergoing an overhaul.

I haven't seen 828 in steam, but many videos and airings of Southern Steam in ITV Meridian used to feature 828 quite a lot, when I was growing up.

Apparently she dragged a poorly 5029 around as well as the train on one day. From the ERPS collection.

This was 828's first mainline outing I believe on 25th March 1994 between Didcot & Sheffield. Unfortunately she blew a fusable plug and was failed at Ambergate Jcn

Does anyone have a picture of the toy parrot which was attached to a lamp bracket for part of the journey please?
That would be something different for the ERPS records. ( Yes, it was blue, but I'n nor certain of its nationality.... )

Another one of the event that Romsey mentioned - the Intercity Sunset. It was ran on two days, the 1st April 1994 and repeated on the 3rd. One locomotive from each of the 'Big Four' companies, plus 71000 took part. The Duke didn't make the 3rd, declared a failure at Crewe at the end of the first run. The picture shows the line-up at Llandudno Junction - each loco was allocated a leg between Crewe and Holyhead - Romsey is correct when he states that the Crewe-Llandudno Junction leg was double headed with 828 and 5029.

Thanks for sharing that and the other shots. I was at the other end of the station....

The advertising of the D-Day specials was put out to tender and tickets were only sold for single journeys. The company who did the marketing folded a couple of days before the D-Day events in Southampton Docks. The general impression was there were more support crew and stewards on the trains than passengers.
Looking back at the photos the Saturday was absolutely dreadful with low cloud and drizzle, but the Sunday was superb. It was also an excuse to look around the Eastern Docks where I had started work 20 years before.

    Cheers, Neil

Yes, Neil, I do - a slide (which I'm afraid haven't scanned but will try!) of it tired and shagged out after a prolonged squawk, at YJ.

I was support crew/Carnforth stock rep, that weekend, which was entertaining for many reasons - overtaking 5029 at Westbury, a noisy climb of Honiton, coaling by hand at Exeter and a good night out in Bristol with Harry Frith Jnr and the gang! The M7 was also working shuttles between YJ and Pen Mill, a pair 20s expired on a railtour and we worked then the first main line photo-charter to Salisbury with 828 and the Carnforth stock (including the Pilkingtons!), the following day.
