Pop over to Churnet Valley and experience 6046 climbing for nearly 5miles on 1in45/59 gradients. Hopefully by end of year 5197 should be ready to play too! Double-headed S160's anyone??

Thanks for the heads up - a very enjoyable day, especially when Jim was cut loose for the last two solo runs.

I notice that next to the Lima 8758 plate is another plate showing USATC 4435 and ALCo 73427. Is the latter plate from another loco or if not, how do the two relate?

Just had a catch up with Andy Tarran & Smiler (S160 rebuilders extraordinaire ) we came to the conclusion that the build contract for the S160's was awarded to the American Locomotive Co. Who sub contracted some of the build to Lima & Baldwin, also the Lima builders plate was cast from one of Greg's (CVR) plates with the number altered to 8758 (5820) but not the build month, which should read April

Interesting, and thanks for the info. Assuming the CVR Lima plate was off 5197 (as 6046 is a Baldwin), then the equivalent USATC plate (if original!) is correctly numbered 5197 (unfortunately my only photo of it isn't good enough to read the equivalent ALCo number). Of course the numbering process may have changed at some point - must have a look to see if there is a complete listing of the class somewhere.

Anyway, the main thing is Big Jim is back and sounding good!

Isn't 5197 officially Lima works #8856? However IIRC when Derek Foster first bought it investigation revealed that the frames carried a different builder's number - which brings us back to the old argument on 'loco identities'. Ray.

    And Finally!!

I said I had a piccy of her somewhere in transport livery, a bit of a diffence!!

OK so not the best photo................................ I was probably freezing me nuts off at the time! But it gives you a nice "compare & contrast" between then and now, AND its how remember her. :)

I recall a gala back on the 80s(?) when she was piloted by Gothenburg. Talk about "Little and Large." :) always liked the USATC grey.

That WAS the gala.................. late 82 or early 83 (I think!)....................... you forgot CoW also being piloted Gothenburg, or was that the Pug?- now THAT'S "little & Large"!! And if memory serves, I think it was also CoW's debut gala, though I could be wrong..................

Any way, back on topic, the photo would have been taken after they finished filming The Yanks, I have some more pics somewhere...................... so as and when I find them!

The Advanced Steam Traction Trust designed the Lempor on 5820 and looking at their website, it is suggested that once 'run in' they originally intended to revisit Big Jim to plug in various modern bits of measurement technology to test its performance to see what the steaming improvements are and to see if any further tweaking was needed.

Did this ever happen, and if so what were the results ? Was the Lempor worthwhile ?

ASTT are currently putting together the test gear and laptop interface etc, and the intention is to try the kit on a smaller scale first to iron out any problems before 5820 is tested. Clearly we will only have a limited time window at the KWVR so it must be 'right first time'. The small scale test will be carried out soon.
