The Stirling Single tender project is another 'good news' story for the NRM. Strangely I can find no mention of it on the NRM website, neither have the entries for the locomotive or tender been updated.

I hope it doesn't get left to rot, but as a restored object I'd be sure some exhibition purpose could be found for it, even if not at York.

Maybe a "replica" - i.e. non functioning - Sturrock locomotive? Thinking a bit like the replica Bloomer (not Tysley's one, the other one which used to be outside Wolverton works). Something which could be a potential project for some graduates or enthusiasts with a reasonable goal of producing something to go ahead of that tender.

Have No 1 running with two tenders to extend it's range like Bittern, should be able to pull all of load 1 behind it then ;)

Seriously though, I think the inauthentic tender is more asthetically pleasing, the correct one looks too large in proportion.

For just that reason the locomotive acquired the wrong tender many years ago and thus is part of its history now. I suspect both tenders will be retained and the one paired with the locomotive will be switched from time to time depending on the emphasis of the display at the time.

Correct Peter - as for the website and collection entries, there are major problems at present and folks are working on it.

I remember being absolutely stunned when I saw the almost-complete tender on display during the "Great Goodbye"! A really worthwhile project, yet it seems to have slipped almost completely under the radar.

However, ask Flickr and thou shalt recieve...

    S. A. C. Martin - I love the Sturrock locomotive idea. I wonder Doncaster might like to have such a replica for display in the town? I remember there was talk a few years ago of Henry Oakley going to Doncaster for permanent display, so clearly there is some appetite in the town for a visible memorial to the town's locomotive-building heritage!

Just seen the Flickr photograph - what an absolutely astonishing transformation of that tender! She looks exquisite, as Stirling intended.

The difference in size of the tenders is incredible. The Sturrock tender would look good behind a replica, and to be fair, there are few locomotives of that era surviving, so an exercise in research and metalwork might prove interesting and provide a new and welcome exhibit to further the interest for that period in the pre-grouping history of the GNR and railways in general.

Neil, nice enough photos but why here, surely this comes under the heading of 'photography'?
