Yep, she was in the BL loco compound this afternoon with some of her support crew working on her when I stepped off of the footplate of the 13.40 arrival.

We told on the return leg today that it is 'fairly serious' and that she would be taken north to Carnforth for repairs.

It is unfortunate that Carnforth are having a run of cylinder problems with their loco's with 46115 and now 34067 affected

Hope they have a fully approved, audited, accredited sub contractor to complete the work to a satisfactory standard....

Quite ironic really given the stance on 60163's cylinders.

Elsewhere on the forum (What's Going on) it's been suggested that the true "culprit" at Carnforth is the lubricant they've been using. Has anyone got a (not too speculative) opinion on this?

.....................again. Poor Tangmere, this year has turned out to be a bit of a wash out for mainline steam compared to last year.

I think that's rather a sweeping statement, Scarborough Spas, Flyers, CMEs, Fellsman, Waverleys, Jacobites to name just a few of the Northern ones have been anything but washout, no doubt someone else will fill in all those in the south of the country..

I have an opinion on the suggestion that the lubricant (which one?) is to blame.
    RUBBISH!

following on from Ralph's comments I was really sorry to hear that Tangmere had run into problems last weekend as she had put in some super performances in the South this year from what I have heard and seen and has made some superb climbs of Parkstone Bank on the DCE and other trains - the climb a couple a couple of weeks ago was great to watch and with virtually a clear exhaust. Look forward to seeing her back in action soon DH
PS 33207 is reported as being the rescue loco to take her back to Carnforth

Without knowing what the problem is specifically, it is difficult to make any comments as to the cause ect...

One thing though, is that if spare parts are needed, i am sure 34073 will be considered as before, providing she hasn`t been sold to a new owner.

Sure? Don't they have different owners these days, unlike last time?

    Re Lubricants
To dismiss use of wrong lubricants as rubbish is stupid.
In the early 90's someone unauthorised changed the spec of the bearing oil this railway who used to supply many engines for mainline use had a spell of unexplained hot boxes.

As to lubricants I believe that Morrises odf Shrewsbury still produce oils for steam engines as they did for Sentinel who were just round the corner. Ralph might know a bit more on this one.

Morrises produced a very high quality steam cylinder oil to counteract the higher temperatures of the Sentinel double coil engines, they apparently ran to much higher temperatures than railway engine as my late friend used to call railway engines hot water engines. The problem was that inferior grade oils would simply carbon up, as an aside one could do superb baked potatoes on the throttle box, just wrap in foil.

Carnforth do seem to be having some issues with 3 cylinder locos which surprise me as 44932 seems to hit above its weight.

    Cheers Dave

It's also worth remembering 34067 had problems (when under IR's ownership) before when combination levers became bent on two occasions . 073's were used Iirc .
