A quick look back at 45231 on Tuesday at a very damp and dark Aisgill:

Take away the 5's nameplate and 50 years ago would be spot on I think.

 

Or imagine it was one of the four named.
Great shot, mind, in any case.

 

Wasn't there telegraph wires at one time?

 

Would there have been telegraph poles along that stretch 50 years ago? I guess the track would look a bit different, too (deeper ballast, fishplates, etc) but you'd need to look very closely...

 

Yes, there were telegraph poles but they were below the parapet. You could see the top of them though from that angle.

 

The addition of the railings and loss of Hangman's Bridge are the big changes, not that they take anything away from what is a superb shot.

 

The tree that's growing in front of the viaduct, and will soon be above the parapet, was not even a sapling 50 years ago.

Very true. Given the atmospheric conditions, Hangman's Bridge would have been mostly obscured by 45231's smoke. Isn't it wonderful? 50 years on, everything's different, and yet...

47760, 57314 & Galatea allocated to todays Dalesman.

Not confirmed with a sighting, just off TOPS list though.
