Brings back memories does that, the Napiers "doing their stuff". They used to do 750 to 1000 miles a day.

Have seen the clip, it really brings home the driving on the day, not thrash, more respectful in delivery.

Just signed up to post this pic. We don't get much in the way of steam up here

Tornado accelerating south of the passing stop at Wooden.

I'm not a lover of diesels and as far as I'm concerned they can all be gas axed and melted down - but with one notable exception, the mighty Deltics. They stand head and shoulders above any other diesel IMO.

Absolutely fantastic trip yesterday from both locos,so good to see deltic 9 back on the main line and yesterday's run proved that it still has what it takes,a huge thanks and well done to all at the dps. Also a great run back with tornado,it sounded superb and put in a stunning performance to York where I left, speed in the 70s virtually all the way, thanks to all at the a1 trust and also network rail for a decent path.

    Cheers,
    Mark

I've just seen a video clip on Facebook, showing Tornado starting away from Durham yesterday evening, on that notorious curving southbound rising gradient, out over the viaduct. No fuss, no drama, no slipping; you wouldn't believe that there were 14 on, the way the train was got under way. A very big round of applause is due to the gentleman on the regulator, & his team on the footplate. Superb enginemanship.

Sadly I don't think it's possible to put up a link, but surely that wasn't the only video taken?

I loved what you said but I would change it to............"I'm not a lover of diesels and as far as I'm concerned they can all be gas axed and melted down - and with no exceptions even the so called mighty Deltics. The A4's of the ECML stand head and shoulders above any diesel; coal, water, steam and raw power!"

If you are not a lover of diesels then that should be that, not a lover of any diesel.

I was at Woking today when Tangmere came in and I heard a young couple say "wow, that is fantastic. I really love steam trains!". They were not enthusiasts, they did not have cameras, note pads or pens, just jo public. No diesel would generate that kind of spontaneous response, not even a Deltic!!

Anyway, that is my view, other may not agree but I know hundreds that will.

Pedant mode.... you personally know hundreds of people who will support your view, or you know that hundreds of people will support your view????
Oh and you are wrong anyway. IMO

On another tack, does anyone recognise the Deltic in the clip below. Also, can anyone spot the continuity error at the end ?

Got quite a lengthy tour review to post tomorrow, just subject to me double checking and confirming my timings - got a picture of the fire on Alycidon but didn't shoot any video for some reason. Do have a video shot from the door on the second carriage of that most perfect start out of Durham along with plenty of others that I may post to You Tube.

Just like to add my thanks to everyone involved in the tour for a superb day with some epic running by both D9009 and 60163. The fire on board Alycidon had me worried we weren't going to get to Edinburgh at all but some smart work by the crews clawed back most of the late running. The late running behind 60163 was through no fault of the locomotive which was in top form yesterday. The start away from Tyne Yard and Durham along with the fast running to York and Connington were particularly memorable. I managed to get home this morning from Kings Cross 02:50 after a couple of night buses and a walk but it was completely worth it and nothing to what the support crews went through! Many thanks once again all who were involved.
