Lacking the old "currant bun" this morning at Barkston Ash......."The Waverley"
Gives you some idea of the problems of running steam through the countryside at this time of the year though.

Various people go out and take these great videos and all you can do is moan, if you don't like it why bother watching them.
We are prepared to take things as they are today, in your beloved 50's, 46115 would have been filthy and most likely in poor nick. Today she is well turned out and in good order and that's what matters, not old fogeys like you wingeing...

And agreed, for us who obviously haven't used time travel before, it is impossible to know how it was.

Erm, excuse me, I did say it was great video, just not the same with a box on the back. In the 50's (50s as you prefer) the Scots were in superb condition but found the 'long drag' hard work. PS its spelt WHINGING...........

The more I see diesels shoving, the less likely I'm going to book a steam tour. I had more than my fill of diesel haulage last week on the "steam" trip to Weymouth.

It does make you think, is there a hidden agenda to maybe push "enthusiasts" off tours due to diesel action, and then replace them with more 1st class seats, to make the thing more £££££?????

Not sure how you work that out, if you look at the fares for standard and first, then multiply by the number of seats in each class you will find the income per coach is within a few pounds the same.
Don't bother with dining as virtually all the extra cost goes straight to the catering company.
In fact since there are more passengers in a standard coach, they will spend more per coach in the buffet. So it makes little difference whether you have standard or first.

Not doubting your figures but if that's the case why so many first/dining class seats as opposed to standard class? If most of the food profit goes to the catering company - they must pay some sort of "rent" surely - then why not have an all standard class train with the associated income from the buffet?

I suspect it is experience of relative demand - it is easier (or as easy) to fill 5 or 6 First Class/Premier Dining as it is 2 plus the Buffet Standard Class.

It is also probably "self-fulfilling" as the set formations tend towards 6 FOs, Kitchen, Support, Staff brake, RMB and 2 TSOs, that is the easier, and hence probably cheaper, set available to Promoters.

Dining usually sells out quicker. Where there is greater demand for standard a dining coach has been removed and replaced with a standard e.g.Steam Dreams Exeter trip - no coach A. The Holyhead trip also have less dining coaches than they usually have.

A lot of people are prepared to pay the premium for the extra space and comfort that 1st gives, without the dining in. Some charters do not offer dining, as it means the loss of a coach for passengers, the kitchen car. I have carried out a basic survey and found that in the average coach of 1st Class, fewer that 10% would have opted for dining had it been available.
TOCs change the formation to suit the charter company, OK its not often very different but Compass tend to run with 5 x 1st, buffet, 5 x standard and staff compartment brake, with in some cases an extra TSO or FO depending on bookings. I don't know if the set pricing changes depending on make up.
