Steam Railway's FB page is stating that 100mph was officially sanctioned and achieved during the run to Newcastle and back. I suspected that this would be done - well done to all involved.

Is this correct? BBC Hereford and Worcester has just announced that 60163 Tornado was tested last night at 100mph.

Looks suspiciously like 99 mph in that Facebook image. One assumes the A1SLT had some sophisticated gear on board to confirm the ton.

Absolutely.....and in terms of high speed, Tornado will join several locomotives including a few Bulleid Pacifics and one that is still operational - i.e. Clan Line. Just saying quietly!

The fastest locomotive in railway preservation in this country. Dream come true. Well done ladies and gents!

Truly, Tornado continues to live the dream.

Next time, lets put some streamlining on her and go down Stoke bank...

Congratulations to the A1 team in achieving what they wanted from day one. It now remains to be seen whether NR will certify her for 90mph running and if so I wonder what the first tour to that speed will be.

After the S & C runs, bookings for the North Briton seemed to pick up so possibly the news of this could see a surge in bookings for the remaining trips, especially those on the ECML that run on the famous racing stretch.

I did hear talk of a rather brisk descent of Wellington Bank by 60009 in 1995. Others more knowledgeable may be able to confirm (or not) whether the figure I heard was actually reached or whether it was just an urban myth.

The originals did 90mph and more regularly and were the most reliable of the post-war Pacifics. I rather think if well maintained - as she has been, period - no issues.

    There's always one...!

What I heard is it didn't but got to something around 95? I know 46229 is reputed to have done it on its last run in 1996 down Shap to Carlisle, don't know if it actually happened though?
