Let’s step back a bit lads.

I was on that train. I was there. I think I can assure everyone of a fair account.

There was speculation from everyone - across the board. Not just trust but supporters, bystanders, forum users, twitter, Facebook. You name it, someone somewhere had an opinion on what happened.

Regarding “a long time to admit the loco was broke” - er no. They knew instantly. That’s why the train was stopped. Not knowing what the cause is straight away isn’t the same as not knowing it was broken.

As it happened there were more pressing matters at that stage than giving everyone a full run down of what had happened.

Keeping the train safe. Making sure everyone who needed to know knew, such as Network Rail.

Finding a way of getting the train somewhere safely and putting Tornado out of the way. GBRF came to the trusts aid there.

The trust has made mistakes. There have been setbacks. That’s clear for all to see.

But it is patently unfair to start overplaying certain things which happened in a very short space of time.

It is to their credit that they acted to stop the train quickly, get the situation secure and then look to do the right thing from there.

Anything said speculative on the day shouldn’t be taken as gospel. We were all doing it.

I think you need to go back and read post 5409 - no one is saying much about the information flow at the time of the incident and shortly afterwards, however my impression is there are some supporters that feel underwhelmed by the information given well after the dust has well and truly settled and all the investigations are over.

It's been a bit quiet on Nat Pres recently so I suppose it's time for a bit of Tornado bashing to fill the void.

I was on the Ebor Flyer, too. No-one "blamed hitting something in the 4'". After the brakes were applied, the first announcement said the driver thought the loco had hit something. It was not long afterwards that they announced that something had failed and broken off the loco. I spoke to David Elliott on Peterborough station as soon as we arrived there. He was quite clear and open about what had happened. The ensuing months of investigation were about why it happened. A detailed explanation of the findings were published in the October Repair Update on the trust's website.

It seems like whatever they do they can't win in the eyes of some people.

A sorry business over the latest problem. If nothing else it illustrates the difference between running something on a heritage line and having a locomotive 'match fit' for 75 mph running on the main line. Both scenarios demand a baseline standard of engineering but on the main line some of the nuances are more exposed.

I thought we had lived through the period of 'professional jealousy' during which the A1ST managed to grab the headlines, the prime trips and the money. Now they are just any other loco owning group and their fallibility has hopefully improved their modesty and humility. Either way, the learning continues. I have to say that given the number of instances of priming that must take place across the network - heritage and main line - I'm surprised that another mechanical failure has been the outcome with Tornado.

So was I and I must say, my reaction to subsequent events regarding Tornado has been one of sadness, not criticism. Indeed, were I not already a member of a number of more than enough heritage railways and loco owning groups, the unfortunate incident on 14th April would have probably resulted in my joining the A1SLT as in a funny sort of way, I feel an affinity with Tornado which I hadn't felt before. I just want to see her back on the main line where she belongs and hope that it won't be too long to wait

Wensleydale Railway are reporting that Tornado has been passed as fit to move to them to haul services in a couple of weeks time

It's getting pretty close to a year out of mainline service for 60163, isn't it?

Maybe the trust are waiting, or have to await the official RAIB enquiry full results.

And as others say, outright jealousy is at crux of this, pure and simple.

As someone who “owns” a loco and knows what it’s like to have it out of traffic for a year, I have nothing but sympathy for those involved with the A1 and certainly won’t be making catty remarks about modesty and humility. I just hope your beloved 35028 never sits down big time and causes you to eat humble pie.

They were informed out of courtesy, something that seems to be in short supply on here.

People forget that this 1 locomotive has done more for the movement, than any amount of "normal" main line performers, over the past 10 years.

Its probably on a par with FS for its fame, but then again, lets not open that argument again.

Is the bard of avon tour on 23rd march going to be affected by the delay to repair the combo lever and bush replacement?
