Quite surprised there isn’t a video as Rail Advent seems to like one specific poster!!

During the early days of Tornado's career, well before it was authorised to travel at 90mph in the UK, I was told there had been a discussion with the German authorities about running the loco on their network. When asked what speed would be allowed, they said "You can go as fast as you like". I heard this from somebody deep within A1SLT. Of course, he could having been pulling my leg.

The thought occurs that, had it happened .... and Tornado had actually gone and beaten Mallard's record on German metals ....... :Woot:

(just my weird mind going into overdrive :))

I don't know about the speed but a well connected friend of mine did mention a few years ago about there being a possible plan of taking 60163 over to Germany again whether it was a leg pull or not I don't know. Could be a very interesting what if though.

I remember seeing something that said pretty much exactly the same as that somewhere before, possibly in a book about the project.

I don’t think modern German can signalling is compatible with our pound shop version so it won’t happen and you can forget 90 mph running for the foreseeable future.

Are a signalling tech John? is there anyone on here who does know for sure if British systems are compatible with continental systems, for instance, how does euro star and the Javelin units manage to run seamlessly between hs1 and domestic lines, in the case of internal services, and the Eurostar's that go through Several countries systems on their routes?

because it wasn't of British metals, to some it would not count.

Traction through the Chunnel has to have all the kit for BR AWS, TPWS, TVM430 (I think its called) on HS1, French signals, Belgian signals, Dutch signals. All of which means boxes of electronickery. The German railways use LZB (the shoe thingy on the engine that hangs above the sleeper ends, almost certainly foul of the NR loading gauge). ERTMS is still years away from replacing these. 60130 would need double tenders, one for coal and water, one for electrical gubbins.

No I’m not a signalling technician but I do know that Germany and I think France have full cab signalling. TPWS is a very much cheaper and inferior option. I assume Eurostar trains are fitted with both systems

LZB is only fitted to lines in Germany with speeds above 160 km/h, otherwise the PZB/Indusi system is used. Plenty of steam locos running in Germany with it, so can't be that difficult/expensive to install.

You do realise Mallard's remains a world record. Last time I checked, the Fatherland was part of said 'world'! ;)

Im sure at one time early on taking the loco. Towed in light steam - not neccessarily under her own power, to Meiningen for 'servicing', and then possibly a spin on German metals for testing was considered but for whatever reasons just sending the boiler by road has proved more expedient...
