Sound's like you've got the Yorkshire bug. We'll see you in Yorkshire every other weekend now, then it'll become every weekend, and slowly but surely you'll move over to 'our side'.

Yorkshires one of them places, you either love it, or you love it, and you clearly love it!

Amazing videos of an amazing achievement =D>

I don't want to jump the gun here but what is the latest on the possibility of running at 90 mph? Have the society been given a green light for testing once the engine enters revenue earning traffic??

From the postings in advance, I thought it might be a chance to meet up with a few fellow forumers at Northallerton amongst the "small" number watching - I did speak to one member, but finding others amongst what must have easily been 200 people was impossible!

I just have screen captures, which probably aren't as good as some already up, so please indulge me! The first is one the north bound and, if you're like me, you'll probably have most fun working our members relative positions on the platform from it - one of those banned flashes helped freeze the moment for me.

The second is on the south bound - few less about but still a good couple of dozen at 00:07 in the morning! Driver lent on the whistle all the way to the platform - hope there aren't any complaints!

I'm not a member of You Tube etc, so can't put the whole clips up.

Surprising how much was going along the ECML at that time of night!

A marvellous spectacle - can't wait to see her on Moors the next Spring as I won't be able to make the first public trip as things stand at the moment.

Starts at Darlington, then York to Kings Cross one way, with 60163.

Places Tornado in London for a variety of upcoming work.

    Return by Diesel i assume.

As far as I believe, they haven't asked yet!!

I think they are waiting until she settles down (ie: make sure no problems show up etc...) and then go for it.

Another reason (has already been said a couple of pages back) is that they get peoples interest twice-the first runs at 75mph-and the second runs at 90mph.

Just a couple of quick questions, after watching a DVD I have on the Thompson & Peppercorn Pacifics:

    1. Has Tornado been built with an original A1 side bolster bogie, or has it been fitted with an A4-type bogie with centre bearing for better ride qualities?

    2. What's the purpose of the short lengths of casing ahead of the firebox, between the running plate and the boiler cladding?

    Richard.

My Father, our friend and I have booked on the evening run. I expect 60163 will not notice the Surrey Hills going by the videos of her test runs. We had hoped to get on the other run but it filled up very fast unsuprisingly. I would imagine she will feature quite a bit in Steam Dreams programme next year as Graeme Bunker is involved with both the A1 Steam trust (Operations Director) and Steam Dreams (CEO). So there should be a few chances to see her in action in the South.

An interesting question. From reading one of Peter Townend's books the ride quality was a known problem in BR days and he was successful in getting one of class shopped early for the problem to be looked into. Without being near the book in question I believe the locomotive bogie was stripped and the springs put into the 'bosh' for cleaning, another set of springs were re-fitted, no other obvious problems found and the loco ran smoothly when it re-entered service. The conclusion drawn was that the original springs did not provide sufficient tension(?)/compression(?) under load.

It would be fascinating to learn how the A1 team have approached this, and indeed hear how the locomotive rode on it's 75mph test run.

As far as I remember, the ride 'problem' was much reduced by a tightly coupled tender.

From the sources I have, one of the ride problems was due to the shorter overall wheelbase of the A1s as compared with the Gresley Pacific classes.
As 60525 has correctly said, trials were conducted with a welded bogie identical to the A4 pattern, with a centre pin instead of side bolsters to support the weight. The trials were a success, and the springs, when removed for overhaul, were not specifically marked up as being from this experimental bogie. Chances are, they could have been fitted either to another loco., or in different relative positions on the loco. they came off.

The results of the tests showed that with an A4 bogie, the A1 ran with ride qualities akin to those of an A4., and that the root of the problem lay in the bogie side control springs, which on the A1s were not set-up with enough preload. I think Peter Townend said on the DVD I have that the preload was increased to around 3.5 tons to cure the problem.

Tighter coupling of the tender buffing gear would attempt to stop the back end lurching around, but I would have thought this would also lead to the front end rolling even more wildly as it wasn't being constrained adequately by the bogie side control springs.

Which is why I asked the question - If the A1 Group have done their homework, I would imagine an A4-type bogie will be fitted under Tornado. I haven't had chance to have a look at close quarters yet unfortunately, but would be interested to find out whether the ride problem has been accounted for in the new build.

    Richard.

I believe that Tornado has indeed got an A4-type bogie.

What's the crack with 60163 now? In the paintshop yet? Or is it on show in the Great Hall?

Is there any truth in Tornado going back to Darlington after repainting for the meeting of A1 Trust contributors.

I would doubt it, Hopetown works isn't main line connected.
