Well, fabulous video; you must know every good photo point in the north of England, Steve. I'm starting to wonder whether we've seen double headed big engines over the S & C in recent times ??

Thanks Pete , can’t remember a big engine double header going North over the S&C other than the two Riley fives in recent times.

Indications from RTT's approximate times are that the return leg delivered an Appleby start to Garsdale pass time of 26 minutes. So this is what 15P's worth of head end power can do for Load 13 over Ais Gill. An interesting comparison to this, putting it into some kind of perspective, is given in 30567's assessment of the simply outstanding Britannia effort on July 10th's "Fellsman".............

"...........Suppose RTT was right and it was 24 mins from Appleby to Garsdale. Deduct 3' 30 to Ormside and 3'30 from Ais Gill to Garsdale and you have 17 mins for the 15.7 miles. That's the fourth best in preservation and far and away the best class 7 on record. Add a 12th coach on and what would you add to the time? --- maybe 5%. Even then 18 mins would put that run easily in the top ten with all the others being class 8s. Tremendous by the Brit with T. Jones and M. Wylie..........."

So today's effort....one for the record books?? Maybe in the "hybrid power" category?? I certainly think this one would qualify for the immortal accolade once delivered so memorably by Eric Morecambe....... "Not far short of Not Bad".

And as for the purists?? Well, they had their chance to get used to BIL's unaccustomed pairings on the occasion of 2nd February's CME with the BIL/ Mayflower duet. 49.5 at the Ais Gill Summit Board on that day according to OTW. For sure, Purity isn't everything...;)

Cracking way of using the Waverley as a loaded test run for Guardsman I must admit.

You wait for ages for a steam train and two come along at once, magic, 'Scots Guardsman' piloting 'British India Line' away from Helwith Bridge with the final
    'Waverley' of the season.

Lovely late evening sunshine at Ribblehead as 'Scots Guardsman' heads 'British India Line' passed the old Station Masters house with the return 'Waverley'

Using Nige’s excellent video, and timing between the occupation bridge at Angerholme and the road bridge, gives an average speed of around 50/1 mph.

They weren't too happy when 10A popped Mayflower on the front of #18 on yon WCME, not me sat in first class, I enjoyed it. To me it makes a lot of sense to get the snagging done on a loaded train on the main line, then if something crops up there's a tried and trusted performer with adequate power to provide the grunt, no 'sitting down' on the main line, no serious delays, happy days all round...................except for the purists.

No complaints here. Charter plus test run makes total sense to me. Surprised it isn't done more often.
