Excellent shot, best I've seen by far.

Thanks Henry. The main B6479 road from Horton to Ribblehead is hidden between the second wall and the cottage. Just off the photo to the right is a metal gate in the second wall on the main road. There is a footpath finger post at the gate leading up the fields and further onto the fells. There were 3 of us there for the shot. Harold.

Thanks Henry, I haven't taken many shots of the viaduct over the years with the most memorable being 'Sir Lamiel' in the snow back in 1984.

Out of interest I wonder why any photo or video can be classified as better than say , right place, composition, lighting ,distance, close up than any other ? Just a question mind not a criticism of any previous posts . End of the day it’s a hobby not a competition .:)

It can't really. For the most part, it's all subjective personal opinion. However, occasionally things come together to produce an exceptional image, as they did IMHO for the shot that Ian took of the double header at Ais Gill. Again, that's my opinion, other's would dismiss the image because they don't like the traction combination.

Each to their own, whether scenic, close up, full sun, full dull, etc. etc. It's all good and we don't have to spend any significant time looking, if it's not to our preference.

Thanks for that and your right as sometimes a shot can be totally brilliant especially in the right conditions . End of the day it’s down to opinion.

I think that to some the hobby part has been lost in the never ending quest for that perfect shot, so it has become not a competition, more an obsession. ponder.gif

It's still a hobby though, just a "more serious" one. There are a vanishingly small number of railway photographers who make a living out of it for it to be classed as anything other than a hobby.

I, for one, am grateful to those "more serious" photographers who are willing to put considerable mileage and effort in so that I can see what I've missed and over the years those photographers (and videographers) have provided us all with a fantastic visual record of mainline steam. If they didn't take it so "seriously", then I doubt if the record would be so complete, or of as high quality.

Nothing wrong with a quest for the "perfect" shot. I agree that some are more than a tad obsessed but for them the obsession is all part of the game. Would be a dull old world if we all had exactly the same approach to photography.
