Hasn't it already been used to turn 60009 and 5043?

Yes, as pointed out elsewhere. Never mind, I should have read the old thread more carefully...

The great and good of the railway enthusiast press have been invited to York today to witness the official opening of the new turntable. 'Hogwarts Castle' will be doing a few spins etc etc.

One would hope that the hacks have done their homework on the topic, will ask the right questions and in due course give us all an insight into the project and perhaps a resume of what turntable and turning triangle capabalities are now available on the network.

In the absence of an up-to-date map of the area, can any one give me a grid reference or a description of the location of the new turntable ? Is it only accessible from York Yard North ?

    Re: York triangle threat?

As this photo shows you can see it from the footbridge.

I did wonder how much Network Rail would want to publicise building a turntable in the 21st century, but not only were the press invited to it's opening but the rail minister too! There's a press release on NR's website here.

I see elf 'n' safety has it well fenced in.... It's a wonder there aren't gates across the tracks as well, only to be opened when a loco wishes to enter and interlocks so that it cannot be operated until they are shut....

Ralph - that fence was there long before the turntable. It's the carriage works perimeter fence which has been re-routed to accomodate the turntable. Nothing to do with elf'n safety this time.

    Re: York triangle threat?

I've had the turntable at Ferme Park for spinnage a couple of times. As it's the same table and I assume running on the same rails in the pit, can I say I've done York turntable or do I have to have a ride on it in its new location too?!

Is the table hand only, or is there any electric or even vac gubbins ?.

    Re: York triangle threat?

There is a fence on both sides but just a low one on the Main line side, more to stop people stepping back whilst working on the table from the look of it.
Visible in some of the other photos posted earlier.

One other point about the photo with Olton facing Holgate bridge. When did the Wagon Works canteen building get demolished?

I know that the plant workshops have been done but that is at the other end of Leeman Rd

At Gerolstein the shuttle to the shed from that station takes you nonstop over the turntable, it may hold the speed record too as they don't slow down!

Wouldn't fancy being responsible for maintaining that 'table then! Ours makes enough of a row when you go onto it dead slow!
