    Back when I managed some HLF projects some twenty years ago, volunteer time could be included in your contribution to the project and given a notional cost. At that time simple labour was costed at £50/day, skilled labour (e.g. an electrician)...

    I know it's all very simplistic, but those sort of figures show why the railway is struggling so much. Assuming 250 passengers, then £3500 per train is £14 per person return on a normal day. But on a Sunday, there's only really three return...

    So £2.8M salary costs. Based on £14,000 x 202 days of operation. In isolation, willy waving a number around does not show how much of a proportion of turnover, the salary costs are. Is there a rule of thumb for maximum proportion of turnover...

    Thinking back to the the Great Yorkshire Steam Railway , whilst I appreciate made for TV there is a level of manufactured near crisis to be saved at the last minute, those involved at times came across almost as Perry/croft comedy characters ....
