1450 once hauled an 800+ton stone train on the West Somerset Railway....
(.... but there was a Class 37 on the train as well !)

I dont mean to start WW3 but if I was the owner of 1450 (which im not) I wouldnt take 'my' engine back to the DFR after they crashed it into the LC at Lydney. All that money funding repairs and overhaul with no cast iron assurance that they wont trash it again. What kind of protection do loco owners have when hire their engines to lines? if something should happen?

I presume any damage directly attributable to the incident would have been covered under the railway's all-risk insurance policy?

1442 is probably a lifetime resident of Tiverton Museum. The townsfolk would like to keep it as hard evidence that they once had a proper rail service to the town. The "Tivvy Bumper" auto working often featured 1442, which is why Tiverton has claimed it as their own. And so they should.

BTW, it's not quite "as withdrawn by BR", it's had a paintjob since then and is now in GWR livery. See the museum page http://www.tivertonmuseum.org.uk/tivvy_bumper/featuredobjects_5.html.

Could always do a re-enactment of a couple of scenes from 'Titfield Thurderbolt' & do a night time swap of 1442, in the museum, with the one that ran through the streets in the film. No one would notice the difference!

Where was the turntable shot taken? I remeber you could see the 'hidden' rails leading away from the table and the wheels of the lorry under the 14xx going through the streets #-o

Did the filmcrew use BR crews for the driving of both 1401 and thunderbolt?

    Excellent Film, shame about 1442.

According to the book "On The Trail Of The Titfield Thunderbolt" by Simon Castens, the turntable sequence was filmed at Oxford shed, with the street scenes filmed at Woodstock in Oxfordshire and Richmond Park.

I think it was a car which was modified for the street scenes, but I cannot find the reference in the book at the moment.

It would be really nice to see her returned as 4850, complete with shirt button roundel. Technically she is the only member of the class that should wear that livery.

It does look a little 7 1/4 inch doesnt it! You dont really notice in the film.

Was the branch reopened for the filiming then shut down again? Shame they painted the station just for it to be torn down again.

    (Sorry to go off thread)....

How did they get Lion from York? to the location and then into Bristol Temple Meeds? I bet the crew of the saint you see at the end took a double take seeing a 'broad gauge' locomotive nearly 90yrs after standisation!.
And i bet that engine, toad and well wagon were heavy to push!.

    Excellent film.

It doesn't show in that photo but I have seen others where the 'real' driver is sitting behind a small windshield just behind the left buffer.

Lion was transported by road from Crewe to Bristol and then travelled under her own power to the branch line.

Pushing a wagon, even when loaded, is not a difficult job on dead level track and if you have even the slightest falling gradient to help you it is even easier. I've had to do it many times (not on my own, I hasten to add) and I'm sure that many others on here have. Introduce the slightest uphill gradient, however, and the task becomes an awful lot harder.

Lion was stabled at Westbury during the filming. I remember going there on a normal spotting expidition and saw it at the back of the shed, I even managed to stand on the footplate. (you can't cab it as there isn't one)

I wonder when the first Titfield Thunderbolt recreation will take place?

For this a black liveried 14XX, toad brakevan and the North Norfolk coach under restoration (sister to the one in the film) are required

There is also the steamroller used in the film, though I don't think it will be driven into the 14xx this time!

I'm sure this would be a popular charter indeed, there was a recreation about 10 yrs ago with
1466 and the steamroller up at Parkend on the DFR, also when we had 1420 on the Gwili several years ago we ran it as 1401. We did have the idea of putting one of our coach bodies on a well wagon as well, although that strictly wan't quite accurate to the film

Would certainly like to see a recreation happen anyway.... what price the 60th anniverary of the film's release?

We have the turntable at Didcot, we have the 14... all we need now is a bit of road.

In my DVD it looks as though 1401 is still in (faded) green livery with three even more faded patches on the tank sides where 'G W R' used to be?
