...maybe the locomotives were bought as a financial investment knowing that their value minus rust would increase over the years .......

If so, one can only hope that it is being kept in good environmental conditions, otherwise that good work will soon begin to deteriorate!

    @lynbarn

If you are still referencing a certain green Peckett that hasn't steamed since the 90s, I put out some gentle feelers a while back about organizing it getting a new box fitted (at fairly minimal cost or possibly for free in return for a share of ownership) and got the distinct impression that at least some of it's owners weren't particularly keen on doing anything with it. I didn't bother pursuing matters beyond a few conversations with relevant parties, on the basis that it would make more sense to come to that sort of arrangement with an owning group who were keen on the idea than a reluctant one!

If anyone is interested there are some photos of the sabero colliery railway which show the 3 locos and the directors saloon thought to be in collection x being unloaded in London.

Lovely little locos, and they look to be in very good condition on arrival to the UK.
Hopefully one day we will see atleast one of then running, pulling that carriage!

It would also be interesting to see some of the collection in its unrestored condition, as I understand that some of the locos went direct into storage. Much like the welsh locos when they returned to the USA.

When I first heard about this collection, like many others, I too was frustrated and fascinated that they have been out of sight and hidden away in such a secretive nature- for such a long time! However, I now appreciate why this has been done. Keep then safe and secure until there was somewhere to run/display them (which is the trust ultimate aim)
The trust must be applauded on concentrating their efforts and funds on the VoR.

An official list of the stock would of course be very welcome, to clear up the speculation (Burnett Hall? Lew?!), however this has always been and should be up to the owners. Speculation and discussion has been fun however!

There is hopefully lots to look forward too.

Just as an update on my previous post, as I was passing by that way at the weekend I stopped to take a quick look from the road where the test track is visible, and there was no sign of any activity/clearance which might suggest there is any immediate plan to reactivate it. (No sign of any locos or coaches having emerged blinking into the daylight either!)

The planning Certificate of Lawfulness, for the test track, was granted by the Council in May.

Came across this news item in a very old copy of 'Narrow Gauge Times' (1979). Thought it might be of interest...

Now if I was a betting man I'd say that had just been unloaded on the section of track being discussed in the "disused Tracks in Surrey" thread!
I believe this was the garratt that was later stored at the Brecon Mountain for a time.
If it is back in Surrey now, it's not sat there......

Is this the one that was stored in a yard South of Pickering for a number of years?
Originally bought with the intention of working on a reinstated narrow gauge line between Whitby and Scarborough.

No Bryan, that went to Exmoor initially and I think it's now at the Welsh Highland

People are getting their Garratts confused! Easy to do.

82, Hanomag 10634, the one pictured above, has never as far as I know moved from its collection X location since arrival in 1978.

77, Hanomag 10629, was imported to the collection X location I'm not sure when, went to Brecon 1986, and to Exmoor 2003.

The above are both NG13 class. The following are NG16 class:

115, Beyer Peacock 6925, 130, Beyer Peacock 7431, and 87, Cockerill 3267 were all imported to North Yorks 1/1998, and all moved to Exmoor circa 12/1998. 130 subsequently moved to the Welsh Highland last year. 87 went to FR for Welsh Highland 2006.

I think I've got that right! Corrections/additions welcome.

That will teach me to check such things on Wikipedia!(which has NG82 down as the one that spent time at the BMR)

Either or both I suppose, which would you like? (The photo may be anything.) Preston Services don't have a Garratt of their own, they are acting as an agent for Exmoor Steam Railway. Back in 2005 they were offering two for sale, 87 and 130. 87 subsequently went to the FR, and 130 to WHR (whether Preston were instrumental in these sales I know not). That advert has remained ever since.

There were 5 NGG13/16s at Exmoor at one stage, 77, 87, 109, 115 and 130. 77 is still there and 80% restored, 115 is still there and not restored. The rest, under the ownership of the WHR (87), Pete Waterman (109) and Peter Best (130) are all in whole or in part at Dinas in varying stages of restoration.

This is not a drill. Repeat: this is not a drill. The latest issue of the NGRS "Narrow Gauge News" (no.360, September 2020) has an unexpected windfall on p.49 - nine colour photos taken inside Collection X 0n 21st April 1980. Six steamers - Avonside 2057, Bagnall 2895, Henschel 16073, Couillet 1209, Henschel 16045, Hanomag 10634, plus Dick Kerr no.18 and two shots (interior and exterior) of Hulleras de Sabero director's coach. No sign of Lew or Burnett Hall.

Prepare for anti-climax - the photos are a little muzzy, and the locos are all tightly-packed. But at least we have proof that they were there 40 years ago...
