    There is one 'real' operational DeWinton, being Chaloner at Leighton Buzzard. Alan Keef has a replica, Taffy which uses some parts recovered from a demic DeWinton. Some Ffestiniog volunteers recently built a new DeWinton look a like (it looks a bit 'lean' to my eyes but I have not seen it adjacent to the real thing).

    A further new VBT loco was recently built at Llangollen(?) in 2010 by A Barber & S Newton and shown out of steam at Ffestiniog in May. I haven't seen any pictures so can't comment as to whether it is in the DeWinton style. Further VBT 2' gauge locos currently in service (not DeW lookalikes) are;

    Wilbrighton 2'Paddy' from Amerton, Forshaw -/?? located somewhere in Bedfordshire and first seen in public at the Old Warden Traction Engine Rally last year, Kierstead -/79 at Telford & Horsehay (assuming this has returned to traffic), Hall 1859 'Swift' at North Ings (not sure if serviceable at present), Parmenter -/2010 (new frames following original 2004 loco) at Launceston and Roanoke -/2004 on a private site in Cornwall.

    Thats 10 potential engines, most of which have been pretty shy of passenger workings if having ever worked a train in public. Time will tell if the Leighton Buzzard event will really be worth talking about.

    Regards

    JP

    Thanks for this. I'm aware of Chaloner and Paddy having seen these at work a number of times. The others are new to me so very grateful for the info.

    Parmenter (percy) was also at the Festiniog "Quirky" Gala last year, in the company of St Paddy (which was at Beamish later in 2010) and Leary?

    I think I'm right in saying that the assemby in the picture got at least as far as Minffordd, on one trip.

    Thanks for the further info StoneRoad. Here's hoping that Leighton Buzzard manages to attract a fair number of Coffee Pots.

    Previously discussed on the forum is the existence of a DeWinton VBT somewhere on the top of a Welsh mountain, but Leighton Buzzard will have pulled off the recovery and restoration of the century if they get it to Stonehenge Works!
