It was a Black 5, I know that much. At least you can't see it's a rake of Mk 2s. The joys of a free rail pass and a night in a youth hostel in Glasgow.

I suspect it may be a vessel with a tripple-expansion marine engine driving a pair of paddle wheels that Uncle Frank is referring to. How is dear old Waverley these days?

 

Yes - on Monday there were three LNER steam machines in Fort William - 62005, later, I am afraid, to cause chaos on a hillside above Morar, as she did again today, 61994 at Tom na Faire and Waverley at Crannog Pier.


Waverley is currently on North Pier, Oban, outisde a reasonable Italian restaurant, and she and 62005 will be in close proximity again in Mallaig tomorrow - and if tptb think I'm controversial on here - don't get me going about paddle steamer mismanagers!. It must take real skill to lose three to four hundred thousand a year for six years on end and still be sailing!

Bus - steam train - paddle steamer on a line journey from Oban to Kyle tomorrow - its a good few years since that has been tried. And a gas guzzler in store until Saturday while we are away.

 

Line journey by bus, steam train and paddle steamer from Oban to Kyle of Lochalsh satisfactorily completed as planned in brilliant weather. I was quite amused by the two video photographers from the front coach who simply did not understand when I suggested that their films of 44871 might be nicely complemented by the LNER machine due in the other end of Mallaig in ten minutes time - spoke volumes about today's education that did!

The contrast between the driving styles of 62005 and 44871 was quite marked too, and the amount of cinders in your hair - clear winner 44871 with a fair pile to be brushed out onto the Waverley's decks.

61994 reported failed and to return south for repairs. 45407 to head north as replacement.

Could anybody please advise me which loco's leaving Fort William are currently smokebox leading and which loco may be used for this friday's (24th Sept) afternoon service. Many thanks for any info and help received. regards Michael

It was on fine form as of last Thursday when i rode behind it to Mallaig.

44871 was spectacular last Tuesday. I had the front droplight for the tender first run all the way from Mallaig to Fort William. Just when you thought she couldn't work any harder the decibel levels went up again - superb stuff. The climb from Loch Eilt towards Glenfinnan was particularly memorable. Wouldn't want to take many more than 7 over the Mallaig road with a Black 5 - got the impression that there wasn't anymore to give at some stages. Can the K1/4 take 8?

The train was very well loaded leading me to wonder why it starts so late in May - has there ever been talk of starting earlier in the year? Must be a great money spinner for West Coast.
