Left overs....

Rasprava u 'Steam Traction' pokrenuta od ADB968008, 6. Svibanj 2011..

Reading in Steam Railway about the appearence of connecting rods from 45562 being made available for the Patriot project got me thinking...

what else is out there, (not just ancillaries or parts from preservation) but significant as left overs (Boilers, Wheels, Frames, Cylinders, Connecting Rods, Tenders etc) from the 1960's from engines now scrapped but are sitting round either spare or unused ?

    Thinking what comes to mind..

    Cylinder from A1
    Spare A4 Boiler
    Dean Goods Boiler
    M&GN Boiler
    Connecting Rods Alberta
    B17 Tender
    V2 Tender
    ....

There are many chimneys about the country, but I imagine that's mainly because they are cracked and have been replaced in preservation.

These are what spring to mind for me:

    LBSCR Atlantic Boiler
    LSWR T1 0-4-4T Boiler
    NBR Atlantic Tender
    GCR Tender x 2

Where's the Dean Goods boiler? What is it being used for, if at all? Considering 2516 seems to be very permanently 'stuffed and mounted', it might make for a very worthwhile newbuild project?

I believe there was a Dean Goods boiler being used at Didcot as a stationary boiler outside the workshop, although I'm not sure if this is the same one as the one mentioned above. I've never seen the Didcot one so I'm not sure if it is still there.

Wasn't there rumoured to be the complete backhead from an IoW O2 at one point?

I think the Dean Goods boiler referred to is the one at the Pontypool and Blaenavon for use with pannier 9629. I think the original boiler from 9629 is at Didcot.

There isn't an LBSCR Atlantic boiler in preservation. 32424's one is a GNR boiler of the earlier Ivatt type.

Don't know if this is true, but here goes.... I heard a rumour that coupling/connecting rods for a S160 are were/still available in the states, and that Big Jim at KWVR sports a few rods from this source. I would hope that a KWVR poster can confirm or deny this rumour, as I heard it some time back.

    Regards,
    Ian

PS. The 'Dean Goods' boiler is at Blaenavon. I had a hand in its purchase & transport some years back. It was originally bought for pannier 9629

Don't know if its still there but when I was a kid in the town museum in Eastleigh there was a cab/backhead with fittings etc from what I think was a schools class.

Don't know if it was real or all a mock up just for show.

As I have mentioned before, I was told that the complete cab of 77014 survived. The same (original) owner apparently had 'Merchant Navy' loco sliding windows on his garden shed and a large collection of chimneys.
There were a number of tender chassis at a steelworks at Briton Ferry, at least one of which was rescued for a 73xxx. A cylinder block for a 28xx apparently came from a similar source.
Slight thread drift; a number of EE 16SVT diesel engines (as used in Class 40s) were in use at MOD Sites and industrial premesis as standby generators, as was a Paxman engine from a Class 29

There are 4 boilers for the 3 SECR P tanks at the Bluebell. There are also 2 boilers for the C class, along with most of the fittings (wheels, axle boxes, buffers, handbrake etc) from a second C class tender - the frames and tank were damaged beyond repair.

60800 has the connecting rod from a classmate that was used as a footstool in Doncaster or something like that which was fitted in 2005.

As a matter of interest is it the superheated type with 6 or 8 large tubes or the "normal" P class boiler with just 2 large tubes?

Again if I remember correctly, some of the motion for 45491 was bought from a scrapyard at Carnforth?

I think it was rods etc dug up from where Cohen's of Cransley, Kettering was when road improvements went through the site.
