From the RMT website, via RailwayEye...

RMT MEMBERS at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway are to impose an overtime ban and work-to-rule from a minute after midnight on Friday, June 10, in a dispute with the heritage line over allowances for carriage- and wagon-fitters.

Members voted overwhelmingly for action after the company refused to entertain increasing the pay of fitters who faced a marked increase in undertaking “fitness to run” examinations on trains, many of which are expected to run on Network Rail infrastructure.

is there that many paid staff there to warrent a union? Do volunteers qualify for a Union as I didnt think they did. Or is the NYMR just having all its paid staff walk out over this. Could be a story to run or it could be the RMT getting desperate to scaremonger and get a story that they need to use a preserved railway rather than a network TOC. Discuss.....

The NYMR arent the only line with paid staff in a union - its been the case on the FR for many years i believe. A reminder perhaps that while volunteers are always extremely important, you cant take your paid staff for granted however much they may enjoy the job.

Yes, the Ffestiniog Railway has had an RMT presence for many years and, on times, there have been disputes with the management, long before Bob Crow's stewardship. Everyone should be entitled to proper conditions of employment no matter who they work for.

Turkeys voting for christmas is the way I see it. The NYMR's accounts are in the public domain and anyoe who reads them will conclude that it needs to cut its staffing levels, so now is probably not the best time to be pressing for a pay rise!

The NYMR would like to point out it believes the RMT statement is factually incorrect. There has been no change in the duties required of the C & W Fitting and Examination Staff. The task of undertaking periodic examination of carriages, usually referred to as "Fitness to Run" exams, has been a core part of the work of the staff concerned since their employment. Hence, why additional payment is being sought at the present time for the undertaking of basic duties forming part of the job is somewhat of a mystery.

The NYMR would like also to point out that only 5 RMT members are taking the action described, a point not made by the RMT in their press release, and that the NYMR is planning to run all timetabled services as advertised and will take the necessary steps to ensure this continues to be the case.

As NYMR Finance Director, I would also like to refute any suggestion of financial difficulties. The timing of supplier and staff payments always means a late Easter requires use of more of the overdraft limit, but the peak was achieved substantially within the agreed bank facilities and the current cash flow position is better than per our Budgets for this stage of the year. That said, as with all businesses in the leisure sector, 2011 is expected to be a challenging year and there is a constant pressure to keep costs under control as we see how the income position for the year pans out, quite apart from the ongoing requirements for major maintenance of structure, track, buildings and rolling stock.

Where have I heard all that before?...........extra money for more responsibilities etc etc........the 1970,s of course. Tell that to one of our young soldiers seen from their own cameras this week on the television in Helmand Province. Bob Crow is an obvious bully (and designer pet dog to go with the image). He has the mindset of a dinasour, paid a ridiculous salary and pension by his gullible members. These RMT members should be glad they have a job to go to in these day,s..........

RMT's own published figures put his salary and expenses at over £145,000 in 2009. Nice work if you can get it.
The fact that he's a Millwall supporter explains a lot IMHO.

Bob Crow - the reason I haven't joined RMT at work!

From what Steven and others have posted, they're being asked to perform more FTRs than before, but the number of other jobs they do will during the day will decrease. Where's the problem?
