    Quick update

    S&T

Another two of the side window panels cleared out ready for painting, another panel glazed with help from Pete and David, the side of the box should be glazed on the next day of work, leaving the front 4 windows to do,and the bargeboarding to complete.

    Rowsley

class 50,narrow gauge and lms lads working about, didnt get around the site much as was stuck at the box but there were other staff working on the track too.

Ben will update on his waggons and the footbridge soon,he knows more on this than myself, the old vulcan group boxvan body has been removed off the chassis and there are plans to do a new waggon on the chassis, im told itl be a 7 plank (correct me if im wrong) using a kit of parts Ben/Tim have in place

waggons and general bits n pieces being made ready for the freight train event.

    Matlock

more work completed and yet another train of trees returned to Rowsley for removal, drainage works ongoing.

    General

new website up n running, looks smarter and easier to use than previous one.

Met with project engineer last week, agreed to produce specification for the new foundations subject to approval by trustees, which involves allowing for 50kNewtons of chunky person per square metre of decking, which I intend to load test when it's up!

Need to spend some money on this vital last step before we can start applying for grants to help fund the first phase of reconstruction (matchfunding available already), anyone think they can help?

    Midland Railway 12 ton wagon

Finished, almost. The door pins need stapling on, and Tim has bought the gloss paint. Just spent a week adding crown plates and side plates to the solebars (it lost them at some point), and fixing on the other small fittings it was missing. Marathon nearly over. Wagon demolished and rebuilt in 16 months.

    Vulcan Van

Not a van anymore, the chassis of the 7 plank coal wagon built to the RCH 1923 spec by the Ince Waggon & Ironworks Company has finally been granted the long awaited divorce from the unhappy marriage between it and the BR plywood boxvan crudely fitted to it ('fitted' is a strong word, more like 'dropped on top of'). Which leaves the chassis to have the headstocks renewed, and then when I gear up to doing it, the set of body ironwork for such a vehicle we acquired from a scrapped vehicle at Swanwick (thanks Don) will be assembled onto it.

    Caledonian Van

Most chassis parts acquired, including some wheelsets, and the body partly cleared of rubbish over the weekend. Nice to see the floor at last, which is actually rather good.

LMS Corridor Composite No 3565 (built 1925)

No work as such, but recent delivery of most of the required corridor partitioning and sliding doors to reassemble the interior when the time comes. Also lots of general spares for this vehicle now in storage, things are looking up a bit!

Some BR platform signage loaned to a costume museum in Alstonfield for a year, as part of a 'Brief Encounter' display (who says I don't share the love?)

Ironically the foundations for the footbridge on the down side are still in situ - the up side went long ago to some land fill site when we installed Bamford Box. I seem to remember the skip driver wasn't to happy as the fromt of his vehicle lifted up from the ground!! Are you recording time spent on the footbridge and extrapolating this to a financial value when applying for the grants?

Midland 12 ton 5 plank open.

Done, finished lettering today, and Tim creosoted the inside once I'd cleared all the junk out. Happy days.

    Midland brake van

Tim has organised a small army over the weekend, yesterday Harvey could be spotted sanding the bodywork, and today it's had some primer thrown at it, and the black underframe has received grey undercoat ready to repaint it into grey, (as is correct).

the workstrain and gang were working around the station and getting the works train ready for tommorows jobs at Matlock

    S&T

more work on the windows, the remaining putty and old galss are removed from the end now, the windows painted and glazing cut ready for another pane, couldnt fit it as the paint was still wet so thats for next time.

    Matlock

The drains are sorted now and flowing on the formation ,ready for tracklaying, trackwork on the run round loop line is due to commence to get it ready for the connection and ease the formation there when aligned.

Just to confirm that there is a standard rate for match-funding (about £11/hr?? per volunteer) for time spent on projects. In the first year or so of the St Albans South restoration we kept a record with volunteers 'signing in' and 'signing out' but stopped after we reached well above the time needed for our match-funding.

    Regards,

Good that, although the grant being applied for at present is limited to £20,000 so whatever I match in volunteer time is money I have to raise anyway. That said, I certainly will be logging volunteer time once work starts, but for the time being it's difficult to quantify (and justify) the hours I spend staring at drawings, writing letters and seeking quotes.

    thanks luv, theyre Bens pics

    quick update;

    S&T

got a suntan doing the next window on the signalbox, hoping to have three of us on it next weekend so should finish the end off, have stripped down one of the old rotten windows we took out the other end of the box as the spars are being reused to replace any poor ones we find as we get on with the front windows, so far one lateral and one vertical spar to replace on the end side window, and one sill under the front 3rd window, small jobs

due to give Mr Briddon a hand moving things to his van and likewise to our stores.

apart from an odd fault and some more tidying up the stores and maintenance things are ticking along.

    Rowsley

gates are being installed to the turntable road, ive to find some target baords now to go on them.

track on approach road is ballasted up now too.

old pond has been filled in at the back of the picnic site tomake more useable land
spotted class 50 lads, HST lads ,some narrow gauge lads,mr Briddon senior and younger and lads working in the LMSCA shed on the NRM coach this week, spread around the week, the coach is certainly coming along with all the fine work!!

    Matlock

Drains finished, some ballast has been laid where our handpoint will be altered and the run round road slewed, this is due in the coming weeks, prior to the connection works, chatting with the boss it looks like the first week will be slew track and the second week do the ground frame.

ive started to assemble pallettes of parts ready for the S&T side of things.

once the windows on the box have progressed to nearly done wel start at rowsley to fettle up the signal posts ready for planting.

hi boss, the two weeks due to run concurrently (that is together), at present we are awaiting NR to set final date, as usual theres many things involved in that including letting all the TOCS & FOCS know the works taking place, not to forget it goes through the usual NR planning process which was 13 weeks ,but the date mentioned in the meetings last with NR was around May so can only work from that, all the above issues have been resolved with the operations and operators at previous meeting ,so we are merely awaiting NR to give us the date now.

    other things taking place (to keep us busy);

1.with the work at hand to do the reconnection the NR sectional appendix has to be altered for Matlock ,that is being handled through their side as is the operations instructions for the connection, with much help from their ops staff and ours.

2.The design for the divisible staff is with their engineers, ive drawn it up just awaiting the engineer to say go make it,its based on the old Buxton - Briggs version, plan in my possession,it can be made easier by us at much less cost, i also have the lock ready to go in.

3.following conversations with both ORR and NR /PR we have requested slewing NR `s track to make a better connection/easment to ourselves from their point to us, and saves taking the wall down at Riverside ,everyone is in agreement to this, hence this now reduces the need to make Riverside platform fit the new alignment, but means we have to attend works to the North End ground frame as well, hence the time taken which would have been the platform works now being the ground frame works,Arthurs plans once again have moved up one number.

In essence chatting with Rob the plan is week 1,slew track and reconnect, week 2 groundframe works.

Hope that helps boss, there should be more mentioned in the in house magazine which has been posted out now, as soon as i know a date il put it out on here as i know people will need to plan time off, myself included here as ive two weeks Al to put in to work for it.

in the coming weeks there will be some ballast preparation works at the handpoint end of Riverside where the point will go and some trackbuilding at Rowsley to go on the waggon, when it happens il be pleased to accept any help with the ground frame work from you good gents.

while on its looking like il be down Rowsley next sunday doing more work on the box,all welcome to help.

Re point 3, I wonder why the NR alignment was installed so out of line with PR, did they think there was no chance of ever linking up? It would have saved a lot of extra work/cost. Never mind, perhaps we can install Whitaker's Tablet Exchange apparatus to save slowing down too much :)

indeed sir, could put one in at church lane quite happily, the probable cause of the alignments being out that much at that end of the station is that in the original plans under the supermarkets banner and works there would have been two seperate loops side by side so in essence they would have had three lines under the bridge (the run round loops would have been staggered and seperate) so the NR alignment was put into what they had on the plan at the time, its noticeable how much spare land there is both on our side of the bridge and on their side outside Sainsburys.

the original plan probably would have been the best for all with seperate loops and a platfrom where the car park is now, but that went by the way once all the planning for the road, bus depot and everything else changed.

whitaker apparatus, there should be more of that indeed!!!!!

Another very good day on the brake van. We arrived to find one side in
undercoat, which gave us a flying start. We worked round in the sunshine and
were able to give it full coats of undercoat and gloss. It could do with
touching up here and there but now looks very LMS bar the lettering.

Many thanks to Rob, Barry, Kev, and to Richard who I understand made a start tp
undercoating in the week, alo the LMSCA who are trying to wangle us some spare
axlebox covers to replace the plain steel plates applied during industrial
    service.

Dom - just wanted to say what a great job you do on here, keeping everyone up to date with progress. A few other outfits could learn a thing or two on the PR front (no pun intended - honest). I'm often critical of the PR high-up's (I note we are to lose 1 of the 4 mags a year now), but the hard-core vols deseve a medal.
