Thank you for the reminder Mr Jones, but we are very aware of it. The parts concerned are made but didn't get fitted because the paint was too soft, and the finishing stages were what may be described as tight. They will be fitted in the not too distant future. In the meantime have you spotted anything else?

Thanks to everyone else for the kind comments.

I like the streamlined lamps on the front buffers - standard ones would obviously have caused far too much drag!

    It's got me thinking:
Did they ever do any "wind tunnel" tests to see if all this extra metal work actually did anything?
Did the "smoothed" duchesses actually perform any better than the plain ones?
Or was it all a bit of a PR job to try to match the LNER?

Absolutely stunning, congratulations to all at Tyseley for a brilliant job. I never thought I would see one of those in my lifetime. The only thing that could be better would be seeing it flying up Shap with a rake of matching stock! Let's hope that steaming her is on the cards, she would complement 6233 not compete (60009 &60007 seem to be picking up plenty of work on the East Coast).

    Now there's an idea:
Duchess of Hamilton vs. 60007 (or 60009) - two railtours leaving London Euston and Kings Cross at the same time. Which is going to get to Scotland first?

Then again, it would take quite a lot of MDF to streamline the carriages ...

6229 does look superb, even though I prefer the A4 design of streamlining. Well done to the Tyseley team for an excellent job =D>

Impression i get from various sources is the LMS streamlining has very little aerodynamic value so more of an asthetic/PR appeal.

I believe the LMS did carry out wind tunnel tests with a model. The LMS streamlining is actually more aerodynamically effective than that fitted to the A4's. However, the performance gained by the better aerodynamics is counteracted by the increased weight of metal work all over the loco. How about a modern day streamliner with light weight carbon fibre casing?

To the ladies and gentlemen responsible for this wonderful piece of engineering and art (how else can you properly describe the metalwork and paintwork?), my heartfelt congratulations.

I look forward to seeing it properly within a few days; in the meantime the photographs on here are a great substitute.

Thanks to all photo contributers too.

Takes my breath away, we have been used to seeing pictures from the 1930's but what a sight they must have been to enthusiasts and indeed the general public when new from works. Absolutely stunning, easily the very best rebuild ever done. =D> =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

Or 6229 on the Royal Scot set, with an A4 painted as 2509 Silver Link on another.

These pictures are amazing, no matter the models of a streamlined duchess I have at home, nor the pictures Ive seen in the past compare to the pictures ive just seen on this forum.
For the first time ive seen images in modern day that really outline streamlining in the 1930s!!! and a LNER Blue A4 isnt just an old A4 in an old livery..it really gives new thought.
it now truly allows you to compare two true rivals..side by side as they both looked.

6229 may not be designed to streamlined for performance.. but from an LMS Marketing perspective... it definitely wins !

to put it another way.. it's Blur and Oasis all over again.

For once BR Green is boring, corporate and dull when revealing this !

Fantastic, this is probably one of the most important jobs in Steam preservation when it comes to telling a story !

Absolutely agree ADB, I think we,ve all looked at photo's from the 20s &30s & earlier & thought , 'interesting historic scene' but imagine the impact these would have made to people seeing them first hand, I've only seen the pics & they've nocked my eyeballs out!
I think if we were to time travel back to pre-grouping times as well, we would be mightily impressed!
Well done Bob & the Tyseley team.

Personally I would rather have it running mainline than streamlined and stuffed & mounted @ the NRM.

Now just for fun I have started a poll on it on my fotopic site :)

Anyway might visit the NRM next week to view it, and who knows - i might change my mind after seeing it.

OK - so here's the choice - V2 or 6229 - and you can't have both, however desirable...

Visited your site to vote but didn't because the third question is missing.
Streamlined and running on the national railway.?
Yes she is in gauge so why not add that question? You might get the proper result then.

Totally agree with you there Kevin a streamlined Princess Coronation class in steam on the main line would be a sight to behold and would probably draw more crowds and bums on seats that 60163

I think 6229 should go back on the mainline before Green Arrow. While 4771 is a great loco, it doesn't appear significantly different to other locos, and doesn't have thw wow factor of 6229. I hope this is 6229's final form in preservation, its far more important in this form, telling the story of the 30s art deco craze for streamlining, than it is in any other form. 6233 and 46235 can tell the story of the non streamlined Duchesses.

As for John Robinson's poll, in the absense of the third question, I've voted for it to be stuffed and mounted in streamlined form.
