Even better, a five day trip encompassing stretches of fast running and high power output behind strategically placed Bulleids between Kings Cross and Edinburgh to stay the night prior to the highlight- a romp up and down Druimuachdair behind an unrebuilt. Stop off in Glasgow for second night, then on Day 3 take a southbound trip over Beattock and Shap to Blackburn/Preston area. Day Four is a re-enactment of the 'Solway Ranger' trip, which takes an MN up Shap to Carlisle, then over the S&C to York for the final night. Final stretch is York to Victoria via Midland mainline to get you back to Southern territory, thus passing Loughborough and the GCR, over which 35030 'Elder Dempster Lines' hauled 'The Great Central Railtour' in 1966.

I agree a Bulleid Tour of Britain would be a great thing, Tangmere did half of it a couple of years ago, but 2017 is 50 years after 1967.. and end of LSWR steam.. which was about Bulleids to the end.

I fully agree, and if you look, you will see that the runs to minehead, is also a positioning run, plus its unrebuilds out and back, to get Tangmere in the right place , and changing engines at exeter shouldnt be that probmatic ,because tangmere would just couple up its support coach brake test, and be off, once Clan line has detatched, and as both are duel braked , no braking issues, ,the other two merchants have 5 days to run up to carnforth, then to york, and could even stable at the NRM, the York to aberdeen leg, would be a week later, so you could even have a Bulleid gathering at the NRM, with 34046,34016,35018,35027,35029,33001, with one of the working merchants running a one way trip to aberdeen, before the actual tour, to put it in the right place steam out, electric or better deltic back, then after the tour deltic out from york, steam back, that then puts both working merchants in the right place to work back to london, if the tour started from london, i would bring 35028 into the frame, and possibly 35009? double headed merchants both ways, pass the kleenex and for this run, give them dispensation to run at 90

35028 may or may not be available from its overhaul though.....I don't believe that the MNLPS has yet given any time frame for that although it would obviously be a good date to work towards.

I believe that 35028, will be a rather quick overhaul as they only really need to do the boiler. They had the boiler off last winter to do major component work to speed up the main overhaul which means the loco is actually in rather good shape.

I am sure if I have got this wrong I will be corrected.

".....the loco is actually in rather good shape". With Clan Line that's always the case actually! And, yes, members were told that the MNLPS was looking for a quick overhaul but this is the MNLPS so speed will not be of the essence at the expense of care and quality. That said, I would guess that the MNLPS decision makers will be well aware of the significance of July 2017.

Going back to 34073, the significant points are surely firstly that the boiler has been removed from the loco and taken elsewhere, and the frames aren't being touched at the moment, and secondly both 34073 and 34016 are said to be under the same ownership.

That sight saddens me a tad. I had always wondered if there was enough of 34073 that it might be restored in its own right. Perhaps that's the end right there. One hopes not, but it's not as if we are short on Bulleids I guess. I always had a soft spot for 34073 as it was named 249 Squadron, and my now ex-gf hailed from Malta, which is where 249 Squadron were based during the second world war.

249 had an illustrious history during the B of B and James Brindley Nicholson was awarded Fighter Command's only VC whilst serving with 249 in the Battle. Would be a fitting memorial for her to be returned to her former glory.

Its like anything, if you have the money to throw at it anything is restorable, it may not be the end, who knows prehaps over the next few years it may get restored, after all, even if the boiler gets transfered onto Bodmin, there is still a boiler for it, Southern locomotives have patterns for the tender wheel sets so making a new tender chassis is possible, what of it that tthere is is enough to start a restoration, things like sprockets would have to be changed anyway,as would chains, motion can be made , so theres nothing that cant be done, if you have the facilities and a steady income stream.

Isn't one of the unrestored Bulleids missing a crank axle having been dragged to Barry with a plain middle axle? Anyone remember whch one - or am I imagining it? Ray.

I think that was 35011 General Steam Navigation, it surrendered this wheelset to 34046 at the West Somerset Railway some years ago.

I believe the burnt remains of his uniform that he was wearing on that day are on display at Tangmere Aviation Museum. (I remember seeing them at the now closed Warnham Museum when I was young; I assume the collection was dispersed with part of it ending up at Tangmere).

Thanks Andrew I remember that swap. I was referring to a swap which took place at the end of steam on the Southern. I thought I remembered a Bullied Pacific which had broken its crank axle having a plain one fitted for its last journey to the scrapyard - maybe it went to a yard other than Barry. On the other hand maybe just having a 'senior moment'! Ray.

You did remember correctly; it was 35011 that had a plain axle fitted, when it was withdrawn, which it later gave up for 34046.

When Braunton was being restored, NDT revealed a long-standing internal flaw in one of the driving wheel axles, hence the swap.
