Ah, no problem, apart from the usual overhaul, a spare boiler from 35022 could be overhauled and fitted. New cylinder cast and fitted on the r/h side. New steam pipes, reg valve, dome cover, superheater header and a new side welded onto the tender/ cab.

    In fact nothing too problematic.

    Job Done!

From another forum, a post by Ian Riley:

35027--Complete overhaul and rebuild to mainline standard, including air brakes, AWS TPWS and OTMR.
35022--To arrive for evaluation and preliminary works.
    35009--Overhaul to commence.

And "something else" up his sleeve, for later announcement.

The extensive rebuild of Taw Valley's firebox is mentioned above.
For those who happen to be NYMR members, the latest issue of "Moorsline" has a photo of the start of construction of a new inner firebox for Hartland, 34101, and they are starting from just the firebox crown, the thermic siphons and the tubeplate. Presumably all the rest will be new, although in the photo the thermic siphons look new, with just the firebox crown and tubeplate being from the original.

Thermic syphons are new. In fact, most of the firebox is new.

I'm annoyed with myself that I keep forgetting about 34101, particularly as it was the very first Bulleid I'd ever seen/ridden behind in steam (I remember at first thinking 'it's just another standard up front', until I walked down to the engine at Grosmont and saw those immortal words Hartland West Country Class, and noticed those distinctive BFB wheels). However, it took a subsequent visit to Swanage and a ride behind 34072 257 Squadron to truly 'seal the deal' regarding Bulleids.

I believe that, ironically, it was chosen as it was the most complete one available ...

Chris/ Bp if we are talking about Ellerman lines there are plans to enhance its role as a cutaway exhibit, probably with some projected graphics (fire, boiling water moving steam ?)
If its Winston sorry dont know, but it will be possible to reassemble parts of that famous funeral train soon ?

35029 was sectioned because it was an example of the most modern express type available to be so treated. I have this on authority from the man who did it.

i wonder, had any Britiania's gone to Barry, would one of those been chosen instead? was the simularity to a standard , with the standard type deflectors and running plate a design decision or just the way things worked out, looking at a rebuild, they to me look more like another type of standard pacific that a southern loco

Thanks for clearing that up. I've always wondered why a Merchant Navy class was chosen, particularly as they represent the 'high-spec' end of the market in terms of the 'extras', ie. the 3/4HP generator, electric lamps, BFB wheels etc.

71000 was in Woodhams still ? surely that was more modern, or was it more successful modern express type ?

More likely because 71000 had no motion left!

I saw the frames on The Mayflower as someone else pointed out on that on that site but I assumed it was 35022. Sounds like Ian Riley has some interesting plans. Could 1 involve 34073 which Ithink is still at Bury

The 8F is supposed to be going to Ian Storey's workshop, not Ian Riley's.

The first is probably 35027's frames and wheelsets ready to be mounted on a truck for the journey north (a clue is the fact that 35022's wheels were painted blue last time I saw them)... The second is 35027's old boiler mounted on 35022's stripped frames.
