Now (GWR people) THAT is what a proper locomotive looks like. It'll go anywhere, It'll do anything.
Very handsome indeed.

 

Ah but they had to plagiarise a GWR design to get there.

 

Doesn't "SC" mean self-cleaning?

 

I think John was referring to the blue smokebox numberplate and shedplate which was a Scottish tradition

I don't think that is really true .
he did put a very good team together , and put the old rivalries to bed - he was a talented manager .

the Princes Royals were never the best ,even when the boilers were sorted . they remained indifferent performers unless they were in very skilled hands , and were heavy on maintenance.
the Jubilees and Class 5s had significant boiler deficiencies , sorted out by his team.
I am not sure who designed the rebuilt Fury (6170) although it had Stanier's name against it . whatever , it was probably the best narrow firebox 4-6-0 ever built for a British railway.
The Duchesses were pretty much right from the off - better with the double chimney , but again they were mainly the work of Coleman , who dissuaded Stanier from building more Princesses.
and then he went to India …...

 

A bit more needed on the footsteps! Seriously though, it looks absolutely the dog's... As usual! Looking forward to seeing and hearing it in the West Highlands during the year - I can't remember when the Jacobite season starts, but I'll be in Fort William for a week from May 10th.

Just reading about Tom Coleman in "LMS Locomotive Design and Development" - Superb book, a damned interesting insight into an extremely talented man who shunned the limelight and just got on with it. It was he who did the re-design work on Fury too, to create 6170.

Isn't that what anyone at his level has to be and do? I don't think for one moment Lord Stamp would have expected him to be sitting at a drawing board designing locos.
