1638 (SR U Boat) on the Bluebell and 1638 (GWR Pannier) on the KESR immediately springs to mind, there may be more.

Completely off topic, but at Rainhill in 1980 there were two locos numbered 673. One was North British (J36 "Maude") and the other was the Midland Spinner. Along with many others I photographed them together at Bold Colliery.

I have read elsewhere today that the future does not look bright for the GWR 2-8-0. Won't go into details here suffice to say that the loco was overhauled not long before it was withdrawn (the last loco to be overhauled at Stafford Road Works before it closed in 1964).

There were two 5s too on MHR

Now back to progress on 46447;-)
Since last week all tubes now removed from boiler. There is an awful load of loose scale to remove as well as that adhering to the internals of the boiler - small boy required who will fit through dome! It looks as though the superheater elements will be reusable. They will be cleaned, pressure tested and weighed to check. Two replacement tender frame stretchers have been fitted to replace heavily wasted pair. Tender frames and wheels are being needle gunned and painted. Many other tender components are also being cleaned/refurbished so that the frame can be re-wheeled in the not too distant future.

Not too much to report this week. Cleaning and painting of tender parts continues. Much of the scale has been removed from inside the boiler and the platework has been found to be in very good condition with near zero pitting, photo below. We are expecting a visit by our boiler inspector soon to agree neccessary repairs and methods to be used.

As an aside, and prompted by the Ashington photos just put up in another thread, is RSH No. 31 still under overhaul at the ESR? If it is, what stage has it reached?

No. The deal seems to have fallen through, although the kit of parts are still at Cranmore.

That's a shame, it's one industrial I'd like to see back at the NYMR for a visit, but it would be good to see it running again wherever - a very useful mchine and a cut above an Austerity!

Work on this resoration has continued but a gentleman with a long white beard and dressed in a large red cloak has ment many volunteers being redeployed during December. Attention has mainly centred on the tender frames and running gear althought the boiler has been cleaned internally and externally ready for inspection by our boiler inspector. The underside of the tank has also been needle gunned. Other than one bad area it's otherwise OK.

Rumour has it that the project manager for this overhaul expects the tender frames to be re-wheeled very early in the New Year!

    Couple of photos attached.

The tender frames were re-wheeled on 29th December. The frames were taken back to bare metal before being painted. Four heavilly rusted stretchers were replaced with new steel. Also rusted sections in the front front drag-box were renewed. The overhauled tender steam brake cylinder has been re-fitted as has much of the brake rigging.
The visit from the boiler inspector did not throw up any un-expected problems. Main defect in the boiled is cracking of the inner firebox copper laps from the rivet hole to the edge. Only a few holes are affected on the back two lower laps.

Tender frames now nearing completion. Majority of steam heat and vacuum piping fabricated and installed. 66% of scoop sytem fitted and new scoop head (correct term for bit that dips into trough?) fabricated. Repairs to tender tank body continue to progress.

On the locomotive a start has been made on cleaning up the cylinders, pistons, valve spaces, and end covers.

Components continue to arrive from the Isle of Wight.

You guys aren't hanging around are you? Once 46447 is up and running I will have to get down to Cranmore.

As you may know, The East Somerset Railway line runs either side of a summit so it's either up or down. Now we looked at how the canals overcame this problem and we discovered their use of locks. So our idea is to create a series of locks over the length of the line between the running rails. We will the train our firemen to operate the scoop very rapidly and repetitively dipping into each lock as they pass over it. Or perhaps we will lock the scoop out of use and continue to use a water column. ;-)
