Although I think I'll leave any further unveiling to the 48624 guys.

    Cheers,

Honest, trust me, 48624 will be running in BR black with the early BR badge on the tender, I know it will.

Well I've seen a picture of it today and have to say it looks stunning. Might not be to everyone's choice. but I think the locomotive looks fantastic and will certainly generate the group who have worked so hard on it some valuable publicity. However, I suppose if someone was to offer them £10,000 to paint it in a 'correct' colour scheme, the owning group may be interested - otherwise, it really is their decision and their's alone.

    Regards

It is very easy, I'm sure, to photoshop an image to give the impression that an object is another colour - we have seen people's excellent work in this vein (I personally don't know how its done) on this forum. So I am sticking with my view that 48624 is going to be black - black I tell you! Paint is very expensive and there is only one colour to use on an 8F. Why use any other colour? As Alexander says, "Simples."

So despite your assertions of it being painted black as being 'fact' you are really only telling us your opinion and you have no detailed knowledge?

The image I have seen has not been photoshopped in any way and is authentic. I edit the Peak Rail's magazine, The Peak Express and the photo submitted was taken yesterday in the shed. IT MOST DEFINATELY IS NOT BLACK. If only the 48624 Society had had as many volunteers as people who have an opinion on its chosen colour scheme - it would have been finished years ago!!! ](*,)

That's a fairly common refrain, but realistically how many societies can an individual support?

"So despite your assertions of it being painted black as being 'fact' you are really only telling us your opinion and you have no detailed knowledge?"

No Keith, I don't have any detailed knowledge of this particular locomotive although last time I saw it myself it was painted black (after a fashion - as that was at Barry many years ago!).

However, I do know that the 8Fs used by the LMS and then by BR were all painted black and I see no reason why 48624 should be any different. After all, the owners would have to be crazy to paint it any other colour wouldn't they? Well, wouldn't they? I mean, paint is expensive isn't it?

Unless.......It's a publicity stunt in which case that is a very different matter as it would generate interest and income for the locomotive - which would be quite understandable; see its even got people hooked just by talking about it!

I also know that there are an awful lot of things done with photography to deceive the eye and I therefore stubbonly refuse point blank, absolutely and totally to believe that this locomotive will appear to the public in anything other than BR unlined Black with the early BR badge on the tender with that little cream star badge thingy on the cabside to denote that the loco wheels had been balanced to run faster (I think that's what it meant) so there!

However: I could be wrong (wow - I wonder. I mean I could just be wrong, can you believe it?)Although there are a number of railways enthusiasts I have met who claim they are never wrong.

Perhaps I should go to Peak Rail and see it for myself just to be sure its black.

It's kind of you and I certainly would but I sold my soul to another ex-Barry 2-8-0 many years ago (GWR 2807) and that gets most of my attention these days - as another person remarked on this thread - you can only support so many locos! In fact I get very little chance even to see 2807 these days but that's my fault for living too far away from my old home in Gloucestershire. 2807 is now rapidly approaching completion but that's for another thread. Maybe I'll see 48624 and 2807 together again one day regardless of colour (the locos' colour that is, not mine).
On the subject of paintbrushes - I presume the time honoured way of painting a loco was by hand but I know some layers of paint are sprayed on - so is it the top coat that is hand-finished?

I saw 48624 yesterday, and the cabside was finished numbered and lined in red gloss passenger livery.

I understand that, like the V2 so treated at Doncaster all those years ago, in due deference to the Swindon build (and the designer's heritage) 8624 will appear not only in Crimson Lake (carrying the 8P - as it will indeed be ONLY in passenger service) -but will recieve it's newly cast copper cap in the next few days prior to launch at the spring gala.

I understand that the only problem facing the paint team at present is sourcing an authentic Chinese Red for the interior of the frames.

Progress observed this week-end was fitting of the firebox/ frame slide covers.

    Looking good so far...............

I am really looking forward to seeing this, will be good to see something different. No doubt it will upset a few of the '8F's are black and always should be black' brigade but, i'm sorry, seeing black engines all the time can get a bit boring! There are two operational black 8F's at the moment to please the purists (48151 and 48305) and 48773 can be viewed up close at The Engine House at Highley. I think a few people forget that we have now reached the stage whereby some of these locos have been preserved for longer than they were in mainline service and their preserved history is now greater than their BR history. This deserves recognition and I think this gives us licence to try something different. If this paint job turns the loco into a celebrity and distinguishes it from the other preserved 8F's I am sure the society will appreciate the added attention and interest. At the end of the day it is still an 8F under the paint work and maybe in 40 years time someone will repaint from historically accurate 1960's BR black into 'authentic 2009 LMS red' to remember this occaison! We are creating history now, not just recreating it and is one reason why I would like to see a Wardale inspired Black Five and an 'improved' Merchant Navy.
Anyone up for wallpapering 45212 again? I'd like to see that too!!
