PS the FR engines do have atomisers in their oilers.

...where it is combined with the flow of steam which will (crudely) atomise it and evenly spread it around the valve chest and cylinders.

Without the flow of steam to carry it the oil will just collect as a 'blob' in the steam line, or dripple into a puddle in the bottom of the valve chest.

Anyone remember the "Plant Streamers" at Doncaster - a string of locos going to/from the Plant/36A - usually hauled by O4 63613. They had their rods connected, and the wheezing sounds were quite memorable! (Especially interesting when there was a 64A pacific in the consist.)

Any news on the problem with DOG? A recent comment on the Torbay referred to a problem with the "drive chain" to the cam boxes when I think they meant drive train to the camshaft. Had the opportunity to study this at close quarters while laid up at Bury once and it has always fascinated me on its "durability".

    Er... ok
So are you saying it looked (fascinatingly) indistructable
    or
the fact that it lasted as long as it has is Fascinating.... ?

No not critical of it at all in fact I recall the French were very successful with it. Obviuousy this type of valve gear runs in "ideal" conditions in an internal combustion engine being constantly doused in oil. I recall seeing some bevel gears on the DOG valve not running in what I would regard as ideal conditions. Just curious to know how wear and tear has taken place.

Been trying to read up on this fascinating locomotive in its preservation era days - how much of the original locomotive had to be rebuilt for mainline running originally? I know they needed to build new cylinders, but what were the extent of the modifications made to the locomotive, compared to its BR service?

It must be said that in some respects, locomotive development in this country did not end, with the end of steam.

Modified blastpipe (Kylchap?), Air holes in ash pan, Valve gear "tuned up", electric lighting in cab I believe-surprisingly not extended to marker lights. Plus all the usual main line gubbins. Might be some more.

Ta chaps, I'll be on the lookout for one of those booklets then.

Just found this link: DoG Website

Didn't come up on my google search first time around, seems to have details on all the changes. Thought I'd post it for anyone else who might be interested.

Malaysia was mentioned earlier in the thread - didn't some of the Caprotti parts come from scrapped Malaysian locos?

Hopefully those two will be good start... the draughting has been altered at least once since the rebuild. the valve gear settings altered a couple of times, and a problem with the middle cylinder (which wasnt pulling its weight) was looked at fairly recently...
Its my belief that we still havent seen what the Duke is capable of and on the right day the right crew will coax (rather than thrash)a few more extraordinary performances.
The focus for now thoughis to get plenty of money earning running out of the old girl whilst the ticket lasts hopefully without breaking anything else
best of luck with the repairs...
