The SVR rely on the peening over a threaded plug technique which if done well is pretty reliable (but not infallible). The descriptions above of hollow pistons is correct however they omit to mention the internal radial webs located between the coreplugs. There may have been exceptions but, having made and repaired pattern sets for them I can confirm, generally LMS & BR practice was to have 6 webs and 6 plugs and western was 4.

This thread seems to be turning into a bit of an MIC.

Sorry to continue this thread for those who are bored with it ... but ... is the piston head heat treated after the casting process? It struck me that a cast iron piston head might be pretty fragile and as the process of fitting the core plug seems to include some hammering ... also a screw thread in cast iron is a little suspect for the force that will be applied to it as described in earlier posts.

So, is the cast iron piston head subjected to the process that will turn it into 'malleable iron'?

Not that I'm aware of, nor is there any need.

Cast iron is used in many applications and is a perfectly sound material, being very good in compression, less so in tension. There are different grades of iron which can be used, and it needs to be suitable for the job, but cast iron can certainly take a screw thread: that's what holds on the cylinder head on your car's engine!

malleable iron was marketed on the claim that it had the strength of steel with the machineability of cast iron. My experience of purchasing malleable or SG iron castings in the 1980's was that it was a very imprecise process and quality was very variable.

Looking on the website, the pictures are shocking. Very sad. One question, (admittedly totally unrelated) looking at the pictures there was one with an non-operational unrebuilt Bulleid in the yard. Am I right in thinking this is 34105 Swanage?

    How about 73096?

Apparently, MHR have been discussing a new cylinder block casting with the Foundry that did the new one for 34027.

That will be good news - especially if they can get the pattern for a new cylinder block for 73096?

But even more good news goes about the possible overhaul of Swanage.... I can't see this being within the next few years though for even the start of overhaul?? Sounds like Bodmin could be done in latter years as well??

I agree - So lets leave this thread on any new posts regarding the new Cylinder and the progress....

I agree that a thread should be made regarding 34105 & 76017 and any progress.. So can these be moved and a new thread be made please Mods??

when it went kablooey apparently the shock went through the train so it must have kicked back quite a bit, i wonder what state the motion is in.

It probably didn't do a great deal of good to the nervous state of the loco crew either.

I'm presuming that the loco is insured, so is it likely that the insurance will end up paying for the repairs?

Is the motion going to be scrapped?

Sounds like an opportunity to sell/auction bits of it. I drove 73096 last year and I know that I'd like to own a bit of it, even if it is a bit worse for wear...

Don't shoot me down in flames, but one question has been hinted at but not asked.

    Who does own 73096?

in theory , the piston rod and cylinder head have taken all the force and hopefully saving wheels boxes and motion

others can correct me but there was no reported significant damage to 7325,75014,45231 when they suffered a similar fate

    John Bunch.

He also owns MHR based locos 34016, 31806, 31874 & 31625. I also remember seeing on an old page (now deleted) on the MHR site, that he part owned or was at least something to do with 76017 or 34105? But as it's gone i have no idea now.

Thanks. I thought it might be, and that explains the thinly veiled references to someone at odds with the Mid Hants. Or is it the Mid Hants at odds with John Bunch? Either way this terrible accident will not help relationships between the 2 parties. I think that the Preservation Movement as a whole will suffer and the Legal Profession gain.

If you think about it , JB is quids in here. He gets a new cylinder whether the insurance pays out of not, AND he gets paid whether the Loco runs or not.

Who is at odds now? :-k

    Regards
    Chris
