Yes or Dial Square or Woolwich Arsenal or Arsenal FC. Shame we are playing so bad.

When did 92214 recieve its nameplates. It didn't seem to have them at the beginning of the month.

Too be fair I'm all for one recreating the past and do somewhat agree here but as said it's the owners perogitive, At the end of the day we're reminising over the past, times change, You can not expect that all un-named loco's will stay that way till this ball of rock explodes or implodes, as years go by relics/items change hands with each comes a different mindset.
Come to realise that, all those who complain are a small minority of the paying punters,It's been said that the general public will remember a name better then a number this is very true think of it this way, we go to railways frequently we see the engines more then once to a hundred times, Due to our interest we become accoustomed to the numerous numbers etc, the General Public don't frequent railways like we do, a number won't stick a name will. (no i'm not saying all engines should be named, far from it)
Anyway as said, you want a non namer 9 theres still others about.

As for the shed banter, i agree, all for it but yeah certain words should be excluded.

    Ahh yeah definatly a B17 numbered 61648

    Best Wishes one and all

people who name their steam locos remind me of those people who buy bottom of the range cars for whatever reason, such as a ford escort and put all the bits and bobs on it to make it a replica of a top of the range model, like an RS escort. lotus cortina's etc.

its like saying, I couldnt get a named one so Im naming mine.

wonder if its more the rich collector rather than the group owned loco's.
perhaps so it sits better with them when they talk about there possesion to their fellow rich friends who arent railway enthusiasts.

92214 is owned by a company owned a lifelong railwayman and very long standing loco driver, his partner (who selected the name) and a member of NYMR staff and fireman. The loco was named because the general public (as opposed to a certain, thankfully very small band of railway enthusiasts, mainly with cameras rather than tickets) like to refer to the loco hauling their train by name rather than trying to remember a number. I am sure the owners would say they don't feel like rich collectors after buying a 9F. They have been trying to buy a loco for a few years now and are most definitely enthusiasts.

I think you may also find that the locos used on The Jacobite tend to have names, in the case of the K1, only when working that job, for exactly the same reason - and I know you will find the K1 is owned by one of the longest established and most respected groups - NELPG.

Most enthusiasts, including the vast majority of photographers, understand this and are grateful that the wider public share their interest in steam sufficiently to provide the vast majority of the cash income for the movement, just as the public always like the fact that their ride is made possible by enthusiasts committing time and money to enable our heritage railways run.

Insulting the people who do puit up £100,000s to own, restore and operate steam locomotives seems a very odd way to support the movement, especially in a post carrying a web address seeking support for a piece of rolling stock!

yeah I know why they say they put names on them, I dont agree that they have to have names, but thats my opinion.
and Im sorry if what I put offends.
Its not something that winds me up if it has a nameplate on that can be easily unbolted. a very small part of the package, rather have the loco running etc, its just an historical accuracy thing, thats all.
I think joe public should know that some engines didnt have names.

What relevance does historical accuracy have here in this case?
The engine was in BR service for what 6 years?

How long has it been in preservation?

Which is the longer historic period?

I don't care if it is named or not just that it is running.

that BR's freight loco's as a rule didnt carry names.
    be it 9fs, jintys whatever.

thats the lesson to teach the public I feel, rather than have people muttering at the end of platforms that these didnt have a name and confuse people.

it feels like a bit of con for dumb tourists.

but as I say, I honestly dont mind, we (the enthusiasts) all know they never had names and can ask for them to be taken off for special occasions such as photo charters.

All i can say if i had a loco. it'd have name even if it didn't have a name plate, Lets not forget that its someones pride and joy/trouble and strife. As long as the rest of it is as loved as the name plate by those custodians then lets be thankful.

Still think its an odd choice though, like calling a supertanker QE II.
Although we know the reasons behind it , Tornado was a name carried by a Brit so that sits a little odd with me too.
Might as well name the new P2 (if it ever gets built) 'Duchess of Abercorn' Guess if shes out there and puts a few bob in then why not....

I don't mind 9Fs being named. Evening Star was chosen to named for obvious reasons. Black Prince is a well suited name for a 9F. Did anyone complain when David Shepherd named it? I think the Moors 9F has every right to be named, my only quibble would be the choice of name. The nameplate being black rather than red would be more subtle, but again a very minor personal preference!

I don't really have a problem with loco's gaining names and running with them outside of gala's, it's the choice of name that i don't really like, it may have historical significance and a proper meaning and all that, but lets cut to the chase - in 2011 90% of reactions to the name will be barely concealed childish sniggering, and i fear the NYMR would end up with a 100ton running joke, is Gay Crusader the next on the wish list ?.

Personally I think any of the Britannia names would suit one of the 9F's. After all, when designed as part of the Standard locomotive series they were meant to be the future of main line steam until wholesale electrification of the UK rail network.

    Regards,

    Dan

Strange values some people have. Getting up-tight about the owners naming their engine, when in fact we have a modern poweful engine restored, in ticket, well cared for, and earning its keep on a line with steep gradients.

If it "spoils" your images, then use photoshop!
