    We use to do that when we were kids - listening to the rails and putting pennies on the line, that is!
    I think that fenced railways are almost unique to the UK. The original legislation required it to keep animals of the track, not people. On the few lines that weren't fenced, locos had to have cow-catchers.

    This is the norm in the US and in Canada no fences , it's up to you if you trespass - you can be prosecuted , there are signs around as warning . Would not advise putting your ear to the track - trains do arrive quietly now we have modern loco's . as regards foliage - you have to pick your spots , not so bad in Iowa - but up in the mountains it can be different .

    As it is in most of Europe, Africa and South America..... it's only here that we suffer from the fence plague. :(

    Blame the landowning classes of the 19th century who insisted on this requirement when the railways were first built.
