Whilst it is always sad to hear of the death of anyone , it will be interesting to see how he is now portrayed . The curse of 4472 in it's ability to drain it's owners of funds and the results to Mr Marchington and to the loco itself is an interesting piece of history

RIP Dr Marchington. Whilst FS (and just about any loco) will drain the owners of funds, Dr Marchingtons business was not in a good way at the time either.

He will also be remembered for owning a collection of traction engines.

I don't think anyone will deny that he was passionate about 4472, and ultimately gave it further life on the mainline in the late 90s and early 00s, and perhaps, despite the problems thereafter, his part of the Scotsman story only adds to the overall colourful life history of the locomotive.

    Rest in peace, Dr Marchington.

I was fortunate enough to meet Tony in 2000 when 4472 spent a week at Peak Rail. A very approachable gentleman who appreciated hard work (I was a cleaner on the railway at the time and took the week off to clean 4472 before service every day). In payment for my hard work on the loco I was lucky enough to spend the week on the footplate firing, and by the end of the week, driving off and on shed.

A remarkable man who took on a locomotive that had bankrupt Alan Peglar and very nearly William McAlpine and Pete Waterman to boot and saved the loco from being stuffed and mounted.

I was born in 1996 so Dr Tony Marchington was one of my idols in my early years of steam. Taking on the restoration of any locomotive is an achievement in itself and this is only one of the few things he will be remembered for. Rest in Peace.
