 Oh, were there flaws in some welding? Do you have any factual info. on that? It'd be interesting.

Check back through the posts, there should be a reference to this. The firebox components did require extra attention, it was another delay. As to who found out about the problem, I would say probably IR since he was to put the whole assembly back together again and deliver a boiler fit for service. Which he did. But later than expected.
Could IR have taken on the whole job? Not sure. Pridhams were much better equipped for boiler work but have now been sold to the South Devon, which might have been part of the problem. The A3 boiler needed a great deal of work, and the task was split between the two companies. Viewed from this distance there seems to have been a great deal of road work involved but there was some method in the plan. I dare say that no one knew that the supply of copper for the new firebox was going to be an issue. But at least the boiler part of the scheme worked. The chassis part most certainly did not.
If the NRM had realized their limitations the whole engine could have gone to Bury and the job proceeded from there. York could have worked on the tender, supplied drawings, and worked through a number of components etc. The chassis would never have moved from Bury until it was complete, and then only outside the works for the boiler to be fitted. The locomotive would have returned to York with full certification, on the rails. Probably two years or so ago.

Don't see why, they didn't reverse the arrows on one side of single-cab diesels so why should they on a single-cab steam engine? And anyway, VoR Nos. 7, 8 & 9 wore corporate blue with double arrows so we know exactly what BR would have done with them on a steam engine.

By the way the idea that the NRM didn't have the expertise in-house is surely no surprise, even to them, as they employed specialist contractors on certain parts of the overhaul even when they were doing it themselves. I know this as I payed the same chap to do some work on one of my vehicles and he told me what he was doing on FS (and what a terrible state it was in) back in late 2006 / early 2007.

Not being an engineer of any description, may I ask what propensity there is for frames to flex so as to affect alignments, other than the obvious consequence of impact damage or the like

In the latest issue of steam railway, the cost of finishing it is given as £776,000

Let's hope that this is a good estimate unlike the out of control bill for the country's new aircraft carriers. A bit of small change from that work would sort out FS, no problem. And they'd not even notice!

Fair point but I'm measuring from a point in time when possibly we can have a better confidence in what the real costs might be. Perhaps the problem was MoD secondees were looking at the original costs!

No! The lining is wrong for rail blue...

Erm, I hasten to disagree. The only steam locos that were painted in Rail Blue did indeed have black and white lining, albeit only for a period of their wearing that illustrious colour. They were also adorned with cast brass double arrows at the same time - I wonder what happened to them?.

Yes, but the pattern is wrong. The VoR locos were lined black / white, whereas Corbs' picture clearly shows white / black / white! Hence it is completely wrong...

    Anyway:

Queensway Engineering by any chance? I know they did some work on it.

Is there any railway workshop which doesn't emply outside contractors from time to time?

To use a wartime phrase "Somewhere in England"
Based upon very well documented fact. Fact; every item made via an engineered process will have flaws; including welds, it's more a case of how many and how big those flaws are allowed to be before the weld falls out of spec. What is the spec? Does the item fall within the spec or not?

Morning everyone, I am not going to get drawn into anything other than to respectfully ask that we now draw a line in the sand over 4472 and look forward. I know the nature of a forum is to speculate and chat, that's fine, but the past is a foreign country, they do things differently there.
The A3 is now moving forward, can we have a crack at some positive thinking please?

Crack and Positive in the same sentence would indeed be a novelty .. But fingers crossed the Apple Green Machine will be gracing the lines (and Grace is something it most definitely has) in a year and a bit or so ...
Can we at least have 60103 and British Railways on the tender as a compromise (BANG)

We apologise for the interruption to this broadcast as the speaker has been deservedly shot.

Have always been positive. The world of railway preservation is full of pitfalls and whilst 4472 may have had more than her fair share over the years, I'm looking forward to see her up and running again.

Couldn't agree more, and i'll tell you what, after all that's gone on i wouldn't mind one little bit if a Carnforth style approach was applied to the job...........just like Galatea. "It'll be ready when it's ready", NO progress reports, let the NRM make an announcement when there is something to announce. At this time nothing can be achieved by endlessly rambling on about it because Mr. Riley is not going to report anything without the permission of the NRM.

What has happened in the past cant be changed, its the future whats important now, so lets get off the NRM's back and support them, they have said that pending the frame inspection, the engine will be completed, the condition of the engine isnt the faught of the NRM,they didnt fit the A4 boiler, increase the boiler presure or maintain it on a shoe string.
