The only problem being, that it is a short term livery - it would be nice IF she could spend the rest of the year in black up until the time she goes in for winter maintenance, that would the make Barrow Hill in October THE event of the year, a Brunswick green A1, an Apple green A2, a Black A3 and a Garter Blue A4.

Come on Anthony, perhaps you a Mr Davies could make it happen, or do we have to send Victor & the boys round :playball: or is a case of :flypig:

Forgive me, but I think you're missing the point. 4472's history did not stop when she was sold by BR to Alan Pegler. As the new operator, he could have chosen to paint her any livery he liked (cf Col. Stephens, First Great Western and many other operators of second-hand rolling stock.) The one he chose was 1930's Apple Green, and that's the colour she is associated with by most enthusiats and all the general public. Also, from your own research, it's clear that she has been in some variation of this livery much longer than any other. With all the subsequent changes and improvements, BR lined green would be as "inauthentic" as any other.

I know that "old Wilcock" in Heritage Railways thinks that the only "authentic" livery is the one he remembers from his own adolesence, but that doesn't make it any more valid than any other. Indeed, I'd argue that the "authentic" livery for her current condition (A3 boiler, Kychap exhaust, corridor tender, dual brake, TPWS & OTMR...) is the one IR has just finished applying: matt black. ;-)

Nice to see Flying Scotsman revealed live on BBC news tonight.

Interesting how the BBC news reporters say it is in it's "wartime black" colour scheme, but people will have to wait a few more months until it is "fully restored into Green".
A clear demonstration of the "Brand" flying scotsman is and the public's expectation.

or...maybe it's just a livery debate amongst BBC journalists ?

With all due respect, Mark, AP didn't buy 60103 to deface the loco - he bought it to preserve it, as a runner, hence his contract providing for main line running rights from the outset.

Accordingly for him, it was his memories of her best years that took precedence and led to the 4472 years that have been her turn out for most of the time since, in whatever ownership.

This new identity is interesting to behold - and I didn't know about "502" until the other day myself - and - as already written, there are plenty of other variants that are so close to originality as makes no difference. So it will be interesting to see how the NRM play the identity, whilst still making the most of this third out of the four LNER pacific classes to return to steam in our time - if only we could get an agreement between NELPG and the Drurys and make it a full house!

Clearly liveries are a personal matter but I have always thought that black suits most locomotives, even GWR types such as 3822 and 3850. Having now seen the photos I feel that black suits this A3 Pacific too and it is very good of the restorers to give us a chance to see Flying Scotsman in this livery. I'ts not among my favourite locomotives for sure but it "waves the flag" for steam and that's got to be a good thing.

Yeah Alan first saw her at the Empire Exhibition at Wembley when he was a boy (at least according to one of my books). Always great to see his enthusiam he still has for the loco.

The pictures on the NRM are great. I prefer her without smoke deflectors but can live with them especially as with the double chimney she'll need them.

Well I love it - I've never seen a loco in wartime black before, I think she looks grand. I too wish she'd stay like that until the end of the year. Just one thing though, to me the tender looks much more of a shiny black compared to the locos matt black.

I find it amusing all the debate about livery etc. I grew up only 1/2hr away from the good old Steamtown, so I grew up seeing & climbing on the footplate of good old 4472 in her Apple Green, single chimney, no smoke deflectors setup, hence that's how I see her & all things being perfect that's how I'd like to see her again, but I know that's not going to happen for all the reasons already covered in this thread & that doesn't bother me, because at the end of the day I'm just really really glad that she's going to be back where she belongs on the mainline once again, and the fact that she'll be in apple green after the summer is a bonus.

Now to put the cat amongst the pigeons, who'd like to see her with her cow catcher, big front light etc from her infamous tour of the states, after all that is just as much of an important part of her history as her equally infamous br green with smoke deflectors etc.

what is most important is that she is now back in one piece and hopefully soon to be back in steam and hauling trains and in a1 condition after her overhaul its taken longer than most would have hoped but its been done properly and will be worth the wait

Im waiting to see how many people confuse Tornado for Flying Scotsman , after all 4472 will be in Apple green later and Tornado used to carry this livery when you get the two side by side when on shed at York i wonder how many of joe public will look with confused looks at the pair?

Tender painted in York, loco painted in Bury. It's something to do with the air.

Let’s hope the NRM has a change of mind and keeps her in War time black for a few extra months. But looking at the bigger picture I’m happy just to see her in one piece again.

Fabulous, I never thought I'd say it but if I gave 6023 10 out of 10 this has to be eleven.

If ever a loco was made for a livery, or vice versa, it's what we've seen tonight, imho.

She looks to have been made of solid rock!

Anthony, please listen!! Please keep this livery longer!!!!!!!

I *think* I like it... It's certainly different! The matt finish gives it a very stealthy, imposing look. I've always felt that black liveries give locos a more powerful appearance, but this (dare I say with the double chimney) just takes that impression of power to the next level.

Will be damn tricky to photograph this one - even in full sun it'll just look like a silhouette of an A3!

Well - from the horses mouth, it does look marvellous, and we did discuss keeping it black for longer, tonight in fact - and the result is that, sorry folks, but it is wanted in apple green for the summer, so East Lancs in a few weeks and one main line test run will be your only chances. Apologies - but enjoy it in the meantime!

Please can you make sure the test run comes through Bracknell - you'll want to ensure she is in gauge for such a key destination :)

A shame it looks like I'll miss it unless... can you make it run through Belfast? :D

She certainly looks much better than I was expecting in that livery - there was I expecting her to look awful, she now looks like a steamy stealth fighter.

Absolutely magnificent. Congratulations to all the people who worked on her, and more importantly the people who put their hard earned money into her.
