Most regrettably, you have not quoted above what you wrote and to which I objected. You wrote, "the most sorted Gresley Pacific the British Isles has ever known?". You should choose you words more carefully. I have no objections to a statement that possibly Flying Scotsman is presently the most sorted Gresley Pacific in the British Isles.

:Banghead: :Banghead: :Banghead: You're reading something that's not there. And your post #4742 is IMO, trolling. You knew what he meant, there is no need to make an issue about it.

I might be able to help him, I know a spinster lady (big house, all alone, 74 years of age:Jawdrop:)................one of "the sisters" S.A.C would need a lot of bravery pills if he thinks he's up for a challenge.;)

I must admit, that when I read your original post, my thoughts were similar to 'Enterprises.' You have qualified the statement (above) which puts it in a completely different light now. The age old problem with text...no voice tone or facial expression = misunderstanding sometimes.

Indeed, context matters and we can all interpret the same words in different ways. When I read SACM's original post about Flying Scotsman being "the most sorted Gresley Pacific in the British Isles" I imagined it steaming out of Bury with a tender full of e's and wizz...

I think you're making a mountain range out of a putting green, to be frank.

My statement is quite clearly qualified by the amount of work undertaken on 60103: I don't think anybody anywhere can deny that this locomotive has had probably the most comprehensive overhaul imaginable for any Gresley Pacific. I can't think of another overhaul for a Gresley machine that has been quite so involved over a longer period of time, can you?

Bittern perhaps must come close (and what a brilliant job Ropley did for her, I was there at her first unveiling at the Watercress line too).

In short, I'm not denigrating anyone by praising the efforts of Ian Riley's team. To suggest that any of us are in any way undermining the value of other preservation groups is a nonsense.

I don't disagree with that. However I hope my qualification has shown that I am mindful of the other Gresley owning groups. Truly, how could I not be as an LNER enthusiast? I have enjoyed the sights and sounds of your own 60007 in particular over my life.

No, no, I'm sure I can manage on my own, thank you Victor! :)

From videos it appears that Meiningen Works in Germany do a rough setting of the valves at the Works. They fit indicators to the cylinders, take the Loco to a quiet bit of line then run up and down taking diagrams, then fine set the valves to get equal power outputs on both forward and backward strokes of the piston.

I believe that the (former East) German Pacific 18 201 suffers from this. Running slowly it has two 'clonks' per revolution of the driving and coupled wheels, probably not a mechanical sound but more a resonance in the exhaust system.

One could argue that Great Northern was more drastically "sorted" than FS has been.;);)

But I'm with S.A.C. Martin. Surely no other Gresley Pacific has had as much work done on it to put right things that were wrong.

Interesting choice of words. I have stated there was no intention. Others can see from my words that there was no intention. Only you have assumed the worst of me. Since I like to think the best of people, I'll believe on this occasion your views come from a sincere desire not to see anyone insulted, which is commendable. However, I have to question your continued posting on this total non issue.

I don't understand why you have felt it necessary. I have told you the true and sincere intentions behind my post: that should be good enough for you. If it isn't, that's your hang up, not mine.

I think it very likely that acoustic resonance has a significant effect. An analysis would be extremely difficult.

I have to agree with this. I think as well that the spirit of S.A.C. Martin's post conveys the inescapable fact that Scotsman is currently the 'engine of the moment', captured by a sentiment of national pride and feel good factor. Tornado basked in similar glory a few years ago and no doubt so will 'Prince of Wales' in a few years time. At the moment though, it's Scotsman's time, and good luck to her (and to all those who travel on that first run out of Kings X - I'm quite envious!).

Yes, I think we all agree, a brilliant bit of work by Rileys, but let's not forget 46100 (I have a soft spot for the Scots, ever since the long gone but not forgotten Seaforth Highlander):)

Absolutely. An unintended consequence of a) the timing of Scotsman's comeback and b) it's high profile exposure, is that 46100 slips under the radar a little. That said, with the best will in the world, it could never capture the (non-enthusiast) public appeal in the way that Scotsman can.

It's nice to see these two locomotives, 60103 and 46100, finally being put right after major issues with/legacies of their previous overhauls. We are very fortunate to see them back on the main line, doing what they were built for. Heartfelt congratulations to all concerned. I'm looking forward to hearing of 46100's return to the northern fells :)

I think the return of Scotsman is really the boost our hobby needs. The crowd at Carlisle was great. Hopefully this shall encourage the public to ride behind mainline steam more. The maintenance levels need to remain high for all the locomotive owners. 60103, 44871, 45407, 46100, 46233 have set the tone for what should be a great 2016!
