I'd agree FS is head and shoulders in a class of it's own .... for whatever reason! .... but I'm
surprised no-one's mentioned 92250 .... the most famous goods loco ever* and surprisingly well known to the public at large.

*the cousins may argue for the Big Boys, but certainly this side of the pond, it's the 9Fs

 

92220 Evening Star is the “ forgotten locomotive “, sadly no longer allowed on the main line.

What about 46100 Royal Scot as a substitute? A couple of occasions when I have been to see her on the Main Line I have heard onlookers say "I have just seen Flying Scotsman".
You could have a special promotion with the Royal Scot biscuits for sale in the railway shop......

Real talk - if the Bluebell hired Clan Line or Braunton (or even 70000) and renumber it to 60103... how many non-enthusiasts would even notice?

 

I don't think you have to go that far - just put a Flying Scotsman Headboard (with or without 'The') on the front of any green tender steam loco and that will probably have the same effect.

 

Mayflower - it's Apple Green and the numbers are almost the same!

 

Has there been any public 'progress report' made on FS's overhaul that I might have missed in the last month or so?
I'm not on any social media platforms and seem to recall Twitter or Facebook have been used in the past to give updates.
The NRM's FS site hasn't been updated recently so far as I can see.
I believe Riley & Sons discovered a damaged cylinder a while ago and delays (mainly supply chain issues?) meant it couldn't go to the Bluebell.
Hopefully it will be out before the end of the year to allow 'running-in', etc. before it's momentous centenary year next year - a busy one perhaps?

 

I hope the overhaul has gone/is going well in view of it being less than a month to go before scheduled arrival in Swanage (- Wednesday night 19th October ?).

 

Maybe @Riley has taken a leaf out off West Coasts book? ie it’ll be ready when it’s ready

Have any of you photoshoppers ever done a Black 5 in BR or GW Green, that would look nice.

Second only to Flying Scotsman got to be Mallard, that doesnt help much....

 

Did you catch the clip of the humongous gauge Swilly 4-8-0 they were running up and down a couple of months back? If that brute had come off rollers, it's have left a crater in the car park!!

 

Wasn't a Black 5 painted in LNER Apple Green one of the locos exhibited for the 'Powers That Be' to inspect amongst other liveries, to decide on what the future BR livery should be back in 1948?

 

I think 44932 can legitimately be called a ‘green five’

 

The lever on the tender is a hand pump for feeding water into the boiler. Not usually used when running as there are normally other means to fill the boiler (axle pump, injector, steam pump etc.)
