Anyone with any knowledge of this class or who has read any of the book produced on East Coast Pacifics over the years already knows this!

I don't understand why you think a single chimney will put less strain "on the engine" (by which I assume you mean "on the locomotive's frames", from the context). The Kylchap exhaust reduces back-pressure in the cylinders and softens the blast, and thus improves efficiency. For a given boiler pressure and cylinder size, with a single chimney, the locomotive frames would be subjected to slightly greater stresses, and there will be less power in hand, so the loco will have to be worked harder (and incidentally burn more fuel) to move the same load over the same route. Whatever arguments might be made for the "original" style of chimney, I don't think reducing stress on the frames is one of them.

Reminds me of those party-leaders' debates, when Cameron and Brown kept saying "I agree with Nick..." ;-)

I wonder why the NRM have now put a stop on photographs of Scotsman for. Are they trying to stop people from speculating about the condition frames?

Not at all. They're stopping photographs so people on NatPres speculate even more. A well known facet of loco restoration is speculation on NatPres. Makes the job so much easier. :)

If only we could bottle up the hot air generated on here, would save a fortune on gas cylinders.

I think I read some where that the ex. GWR 56xx that was working on the North Yorkshire Moors may have been fitted with a kalchap syterm and its a single chimmny. Also think (could be wrong) that the standard 2mt on the Great Central, 78019, is fitted with something and again its a single chimmny....

I think you'll find that it's 78022 at the KWVR that had a Giesl ejector made for it but I'm unsure as to if it ever carried it in service.

There are lets of single chimney Lempor systems out there, which are even better than Kylchap. W&LLR use them almost exclusively.

Well if the locomotives did eat frames then 4472 would have had a new set in preservation. It hasn't. The hornstay design could be improved, but as I wrote earlier a good maintenance schedule would keep both them tight and the adjusting wedges correctly set, amongst other things. The fact that the frame plates have survived so long would tend to indicate that the engine has been better looked after than certain detactors would like to give credit for. Cracked hornblocks are a fairly recent phenomenon and the frame stay could have succumbed to fatigue not helped by putting it to a use for which it was not intended.

As to a better single chimney configuration the problem is the overall height with which to work, the main reason for double exhausts on larger engines. I don't know if you could fit a compromise design that would allow a larger blastpipe tip area than the original but I would rather keep the double Kylchap than have the engine flogged against a high back pressure.

On the subject of train loading, the A1 was designed to handle 600 ton trains and the A3 was a better engine by some distance so handling 13 coaches today should present few problems. The Kylchap set-up does make life easier and acts as a form of insurance just in case. I would like to see the engine tackle a war-time load again, just one last time, in order to witness what one of these machines can really do. A bit selfish I know.

I suspect the NRM may have put a stop on SR photographing it as they have rightly realised that SR seem to be trying to smear their name in the name of tabloid journalism and thus why should they help them stir things up! The stories about 'cracked frames' and allowing Andrew Dow to have his moment - would you co-operate with a publication that was doing that?

I don't think the present heirarchy at SR seem to realise that they need the co-operation of loco owners etc to run their stories accurately - don't bite the hand that feeds you and all that!
